Gun: .50 CVA StagHorn
Scope: Weaver Grand Slam 3-10X

Went to the place in Garvin county today to fill the feeders. Took my CVA StagHorn along to check the zero. Wind was supposed to be light but it was a steady 15 mph, gusting to about 25 mph by the time i got ready to shoot.

Set up the target at 200 yards and loaded the gun with the 240 grain .430 XTP bullet in the green Knight sabot. This sabot loads very hard in that gun. Powder chargewas 100 grains of 3F Goex Pinnacle. Fired three rounds without swabbing the barrel.The group was about 6" and was centered about 6" to the left of the aiming point due to the wind. Swabbed the barrel well.

Took the target to the 100 yard line and fired three more roundswithout swabbing. This time i used the green crush rib sabot and it also loaded very hard.Group was about 3.5" and was centered about 3" to the left of the aiming point. Swabbed the barrel well.

Took the target to the 50 yard line and fired three more rounds without swabbing. This time the sabot was a green one with a rounded recess in the base and a number on the inside of the base, not sure who makes it, but it loaded much easier than the Knight or the crush rib. Fired a three shot group without swabbing. The group was 1.25 inchcentered on thepoint of aim.Loaded the gun with 80 grains of Goex2F Pinnacle and the 370 grain Maxi Ball. To my surprise the bullet went into the center of the bull. Swabbed the barrel well.

Fire a three shot group using the 370 grain Maxi Ball and 80 grains ofGoex 2F Pinnacle without swabbing. Group measured 1.25." Quit shooting.

Fired the Maxi balls in this gun about 7 years ago with 70 grains of Pyrodex RS and it shot really well. Remembered that Cayugad told mea couple of years ago thatthis would be a good deer load.

My StagHorn is the old one that is limited to 100 grains of Pyrodex.It has a 1/24" twist barrel. Kind of strange that it shoots both these bullets to the same point of aim. i used the TC lubricated fiber wad under the Maxi-Ball.

Got myload for the local special hog season that starts on Feb. 16. :D

That sabot with the number is a Harvester. I think the number relates to the mold it was made in. I just got some and the package contained sabots with different numbers molded into the base.

I would pity any hog that gets in your path as it will be freezer food with that load. That is some good shooting. My CVA Staghorn Magnum has a 1-28 twist, so you must really have an old one.

Good report falcon. I'm surprised you only got six inches of drift at 200 yards with a 15 mph wind.It must not have been blowing directly from the side. I hope you find a BIG hog to put one of those370 grain Maxis into.

It is an old one. It was bought in 2000. The barrel and receiver are separate parts. The newer ones have thebarrel and receiver in one piece.

The firing line is laid out to the southwest and the wind was blowing directly from the west.

Hey Falcon, what's them Hog's taste like? being from the Northeast we dont have em here. Can you hunt them anytime yearlong? How do you cook em? I have one of them older Staghorn's, its it the one where you unscrew the back to remove the spring and sliding hammer? I even have and old Elclips, then moved to the Staghorn Mag, to the Hunterbolt Mag, to the Kodiak Mag and now 2 Accura's. I killed quite a few deer with that old Staghorn, it was a good shooting ML for I think I paid $89. Nice report, I dont think Im gonna be able to try out the MX and do sny shooting because we got around 3 feet of snow and another big snow storm comming on Tueasday with another predicted 2 more feet. I cant remember a winter in a long time with this much snow and cold. Glad you were able to shoot.

Bought that old CVA StagHorn for about $85 in 2000. It has killed about 20 deer and dozens of hogs. Most were killed with the 240 grain .430 XTP bullet.

IMO: They taste much better than domestic hogs, especially the chops. They are usually much leaner than domestic hogs.Last year we had a bumper crop of small acorns and burr acorns and the hogs are fat. Ditto for 07 when we had a bumper crop of acorns and pecans.Boars over about 200 pounds can be strong.There is usually very little bacon on wild hogs.Wild hogs do not have big hams like the domestic variety. Their shoulders are wide and the butts more narrow.

We cook wild hog just like the domestic variety. There are some differences, there is usually very little bacon on wild hogs.

Wehunthogs year around in OK with a few restrictions. No night hunting is allowed and in some management areas one is restricted to a rimfire rifle duringsmall game season. i hunt hogs 12 months of the year.

Sounds like you are going to be socked in for awhile. Would love to have a serious cold snap here with a lot of snow to kill off some of the ants, ticks and bugs.
