Mountain Rifles stock is stained
3 coats of birchwood casey walnut and then i had an idea to find my dark walnut stain and lightly coat the stock. I love it! Color came out perfect for me and the curl shows up really well. Only one picture came out Ok. I will take more tomorrow in the day light. Going to use Sabotloaders recipe for the dull tru-oil finish on the stock. Thanks again for the info on how to do the process Sabotloader.

Both stocks look good. Sabot and MD I just finished a Browing centerfire stock with Tru-oil. But instead of using stock wax after the Tru-oil dried, I gave the stock a light coat of satin finish polyurethane (brushed). It came out very nice. I was satisfied.

Looks good MD.I've become quite the fan of Birchwood Casey products. My 700ML stock is just about done and I'm going to knock the shine down on it as well. I'm going to use the wax-though I've heard that 00000 steel wool works as well.

well i have 2 thin coats of tru oil on her. I found that if i rub it into the stock like i do with boiled linseed oil, it does a much better job without the build up and it comes out dull. Coat #3 is going to get knocked back with either 2000 grit or 0000 steel wool to keep the gloss down. So far its really looking good. Almost want to take a bite out of the stock.

2 coats of tru oil. Its outside drying. I'll give it a couple hours outside and then steel wool it back and prep it for coat #3.

it all went down the tubes today as i buffed the stock with 0000 steel wool. it bit to deep in a few areas and took off the color of my stain. Going to strip it down again tomorrow and start over again.
Going with a gloss finish next :( I am trying to see if applying a thin layer of tru-oil will help hide it or not. Lower stock area, starts in the middle of the patch box area and runs up to the tip of the patch box its all light colored now. ![]() |

heres the new stain on it. Took me the entire day to strip it and get it back to where i needed it. I put 6 coats of BC walnut stain this time, and then 2 coats of dark walnut oil stain. Perfecto! Just wish i could keep a dull finish on it but, it happens.
i added some BLO to the tru-oil just now and wow does it help the tru-oil go on smooth! I was able to work just a tiny bit over a large area on the stock. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
