Bore Rust Preventive?
What do you all put in your muzzleloader barrels to keep them from rusting? Ive been using bore butter inside the barrel and wiping the outside down with wd-40 and my dad tells me I should be using oil inside the bore and the bore butter on the outside. Just wondering what you all use

RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
Listen to your dad. He sounds like a wise man. It's oil for me.
|
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
I use mainly rem oil on the inside and outside. did the bore butter on the inside for a month, accuracy went down the tubes.
bore butter moved to the role of patch and conical lube. |
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
Gun oil...
Bore Butter was made and marketed for sidelocks...IF it has any real value it's as a patch lube... Frankly, there are better patch lubes avaliable... Bore Butter has no use in a inline... |
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
I have used nothing but BB for years on the inside of the barrel and the outside of the barrel, I even wipe the outside of the scope with it. During rain and snow it actually repels the water. I never noticed any accuracy problems but anyone that has I would like you to post your findings of your likes and dislikes of BB. I would appreciate it. Im willing to change, if change is good. I also ordered 2 bottles of the Montana XTreme to try out. I have always been taught to NEVER use any petroleum based oils in a ML barrel. Have I been told wrong?

RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
So I guess Im wrong using BB?? I just purchased 4 tubes from Wal-Mart, discounted.

RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
Both of my muzzleloaders are sidelocks. What is wrong with BB in the bore? I use it to lube my patches and maxi-balls during hunting season (use spit patches during off season).

RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
If bore butter works for you, then by all means use it. I personally do not want to use it. I would rather my rifles be protected by a quality gun oil. One of my favorites is Birchwood Casey Sheath.

breechplug,
from sub 1in group at 50yrds to 3in groups at 50yrds, this was over a year ago, have not idea where I filed the pics of the target. here one use that I never said, I have used bore butter as breech plug grease, the plug on my knight usak came out great. 20 shots no loosing, very little work to get it out. just a pita to clean. |
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
What is wrong with it? Its ok to put on the outside of your barrel why not the inside? oil is a rust preventitive isnt BB?

RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
I used it for many years in my side locks and still do. It is not the right thing for inlines, so far Sheath and synthetic oil have given me the best results. Lee

RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
I use bore butter in the bores of my muzzle loaders and have since they came out with the stuff so far back I can't remember. I also use it in the bores of my center fore rifles and shot guns.
It works just fine as a breach plug lube too. Mostly I find how it was applied more than any thing the bore butter was a fault of. If'n it works for you then keep useing it. If'n it don't then stay away from the stuff. :) Al |
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
It is at best a rust inhibitor, not a rust preventative.
And if anymoisture at all is present when you apply it, it will be trapped in the BB. Steve |
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
Bore butter is basically just a wax coating. If you have a perfectly clean bore, a coat of wax evenly applied would be a protector from the elements but nothing more. If the bore is not perfectly clean and you coat it with wax, you have trapped any impurities/residue/moisture beneath that layer of wax and have provided a nice hiding place for corrosion to occur.
Clean and shiny with a light coating of good preservative... works for me. Bore butter works ok as a conical lube. |
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
Here is an interesting read on the subject: http://www.chuckhawks.com/lies_muzzleloading.htm
Like him or not, what he says about BB makes sense to me. If oil and heat make tar, like T/C suggests in their propaganda on BB, then our centerfire rifles must really be tarred up by now. |

I think I can say I happened it to me once - when I first started shooting @ a Rhondy event - I bought some GOEX and by the 4th target on the walking trail my bore was so gummed I could get anything down. My group was very helpful getting meshooting again - but I could see the smiles on their faces... |
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
Am I suppos-to believe another article by Randy.....if it were someone else I might. Is he involved in MX? I'd believe the forum members befor him anyday!
|
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
Short answer, I agree with Randy on this one...
I bought my first flintlock in 1977...We didn't have Bore Butter back then...The first time I heard about this "seasoning" stuff was in their ads...Previous to this, I had used several different lubes and had settled on SnoSeal...I used to compete with a custom maker that has had his flintlocks win at Friendship...He used axle grease as a patch lube... I tried Bore Butter as a patch lube and found that the patches burned out with higher charges in my .54... You've had a cheap lesson in Marketing 101...:D |
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
Light coat of break/free-clp here. Swabbed out before range trip.

RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
i use Remington gun oil in the bores of guns that areused frequently. The guns that are seldom used get Militec.
Am not an advocate of bore butter. Haveseen and heard too many horror stories of bores rusting. |

RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
Rem Oil with Teflon in every handgun, shotgun, centerfire, rimfire, and MZ I own.
|
RE: Bore Rust Preventive?
Remington Express Lube Patch after it's spotless. Or a patch saturated with RemOil.
