BUTT PLATE IDEAS
i put my butt plate ontop of my foot then load the hawkins flintlock.
my foot is getting sore from this.
any ideas how you folks do it while loading.
i was thinking of making something to set the butt into that does not scratch,so i dont have to use top of my foot to hold it while i load.

Why are you worried about scratching it???
I've got a flintlock that I bought in the 70s and one I built in the 80s, never worried about messing up the butt plate, it's there to protect the wood...If you do put a few scratches on it, you could sand and polish them out later...

On the rifle range at our hunting lease we have a 1 x 1 foot square of old carpet on the ground at the rear of the bench, not so much for scratches as such - but to keep mud off the butt plate during wet weather.

RE: BUTT PLATE IDEAS
my neighbor came over to see me and he took a old pair of jeans and cut the leg off.
he then had his wife sew up the one end tight, the other she sewed it up and left a little area to pour sand into it.
he filled it with sand and sealed the end.
he uses that to put the butt of gun on and loads his muzz that way.
same thing, his foot was sore loading a rb after about 20 shots.

i hate my hawken because of the brass lol....
i too was anal about it being clean and shiny and buffing out scratches...
tried using "Brass Black" to make it black so it wasnt shiny but still looked good...it looked great, but it wore quicker than the plain brass!!
ive given up! my brass is scratched and dull [:'(]
i found an antiquing solution somewhere online once i need to find again and order....i cant stand my brass being dull....but its a PAIN to keep shiny and dulls quickly...and alcohol turns it brown so when my patches or fingers touch it, it looks like crap.....shoulda bought a renegade! lol.......
the crappy finish on my TC stock drove me NUTS i dont know if it was original or someone before me redid it, but it looked like it dried out and cracked and flaked...beautiful wood underneath though!

Heck, I just pull the floor mat out of my truck.
But you can always go to walmart and pick up a slip on recoil pad for at the range. Not sure how it would work on the curved butt of the hawken.
