barrel fouling?
My muzzleloader will not shoot on a clean barrel so when I go to the range I usually put about 10 grains of black powder in the barrel and just shoot it out and then run a spit patch down the bore followed by a dry patch (my gun shoots better by doing this). But I went to triple 7 and when I put some of it down the barrel and try to shoot it out it just blows the powder out without igniting it. You guys think that if I put about 10 grains of the triple 7 down the bore and then ram a cleaning patch down on it that will make it ignite?

RE: barrel fouling?
Put about 30 grains down the bore and push a cleaning patch down the bore all crumpled up on to that powder, or a bore button. Then touch it off and it will go BOOM!

RE: barrel fouling?
shooter - just for giggles, why don't you try running an alcohol patch down the bore before your first shot. Maybe its the oil in the bore causing your first shot to go astray. You never know. And it can save you barrel from having fouling in it.

RE: barrel fouling?
It is not at all uncommon for a clean barrel to shoot to a slightly different POI than a fouled one.
Have you tried shooting groups by swabbing between each shot with 50/50 alcohol and windex, then a dry patch? Basically you are shooting a clean barrel each time. If the gun shoots good groups this way, sight in for that POI. If it won't group from a clean barrel, you could try other sabot/bullet combinations. If you still have trouble, you could hunt with a fouled barrel, but that is the last resort IMO. |
