Range Report, FPB Bullets
Went to our range yesterday check my Encore zero.Had been shooting FPB bullets and killed a couple of hogs that were not hit exactly where i aimed. That gun gets beat up riding uncased in my old truck.
Put the target at 50 yards. The bullet went 15" high and 6" to the right. Had a lot of trouble trying to get on target and gave up afterabout 10rounds. Brought the target to 25 yards and zeroed the gun using 110 grains of 2F Pinnacle and the 300 grain .452 XTP Magnum bullet in the black sabot. Took the target to 100 yards and it shot about 1.5" low. Adjusted the scope and shot a five shot group that was about 2.5" Changed the powder load to 100 grains of 3F Pinnacle and POI was the same place. Fired another five shot group of about 2.5" and called it good. No idea whatwent wrong. Last time i cleaned the gun there was lot of lead in the front half of the barrel.i thought this was from the 10 or so 370 grain Maxi Balls that i shot through the gun: Now i am not so sure. That gun was putting three FPB bullets ingroups of about 2.5-3."Will try it again in a week or two. i want to find a powder load that will put the FPB to the same POI as the 300 grain XTP. |
RE: Range Report, FPB Bullets
Strange since you know FPBs shoot accurately in the gun, and you could only get it back on target by moving closer and switching bullets.
I don't know what you are thinking about the leading, but I don't see how it could be the FPBs. Does anyone know the jacket thickness? |

I don't know, but I wouldn't let any of my guns go banging around in my truck.

Do you suspect the scope was knocked out of adjustment? That seems like a large spread for simple barrelleading, as I would have thought you might have gradually noticed it changing. From reading a lot of your posts (since your hog hunting adventuresjust mesmorizes me) you seem to get a lot of chance to test bullets, and loads on real time targets. That is a plus in my book. That's one reason when Wal Mart had the 350 gr FPB's on sale, I bought them out.
I want to start testing them in alot of my rifles. I have Goex, Pyrodex RS & P and Triple Seven 2 & 3f, and just a little left of APP 2f. What powder do you recommend to start with, and what kind of powder charge? |

If the scope tube is bent you will have lots of problems untill it is replaced.
Did you remove the leading from the barrel ? It wont shoot good til you do. Lee |

What powder do you recommend to start with, and what kind of powder charge? The barrel leading was removed last time i cleaned it. Cleaned it againtoday and therewas no lead. Scope seemed to be OK yesterday after i got it adjusted on target. Fired ten rounds after i got it on target withthe 300 grainers. They all went to POI at 100 yards. It could have been that i was having a bad day or something. Will try again in a week or two. Those FPB bullets shot well from that gun once andthey will do so again. Anyway i have my new Simmons backup scope just in case. That gun may have taken a good bang coming out of a tree stand. My hog hunting gun rides with the butt on the floorboards and leaning against the seat. It rides like that because about onethird of the hogs i kill are spotted from the road. Set the brake, jump out the truck with the gun, cap it and go after them. You should see the roads on thehuge placei often hunt. |
RE: Range Report, FPB Bullets
I bought some at walmart to try to. Hope I have some better luck with them.
