The wife

The wife has decided that I need to take her this fall on my Ohio gun hunting trip. I said, but honey you dont have a muzzleloader. Well she says I can use one of yours lol. But honey there my back up guns. If you want to go we need to get you your own ML. I"ll use any excuse to buy a new gun lol. So now I have to decide what to get her. I was watching a triumph at wally world, but the same day they marked it down to $250 it was gone and I missed it. They havea optmia pro with a thumbhole stock for $200 but I have never used a thumbhole stock before. What are some of your opions of that stock and the optmia pro? I have the elite with the beragra barrel and it shoots great, but have never fired a pro.

I had an Optima Pro when they first came out. It was a good reliable accurate rifle. I did get a deer with it too. But I sold it cause I am a traditional ML guy mostly. (These guys somehow managed to force me into buying a Genesis).

First off if your going to take the wife you buy the worst piece of junk on the shelf and then bend the front sight. Work up the most inaccurate load you can. If you don't, sure as there are little green apples she's going to see a bigger buck, andmakea more spectacular shot then you. And then you're going to have to sit and listen to her tell you and and your friends about her monster buck andhow easy deer hunting is for the rest of your life.

Of course I am kidding. Taking the wife hunting would be a wonder experience. Also an opportunity for you to get an excellent new rifle. And with no explaining. So since the Triumph is gone, you might have to settle for the Optima. Its probably a very good shooting rifle, and will serve you.. I mean her :D just fine. Thumbhole stock and all.

Quick thinking on the back up rifle story... you must have eaten breakfast that day.

Cayugad
She has hunted with me for about 10 years but I could never get her into MLing. Says she doesnt like all the smoke and it kicks more. I tried to explain that I could tame the loads down for her,but that did no good. Who know maybe she's ready to start now.

Well it sounds like she is.. and she sounds like a great wife. Your a lucky man. Value the woman that understands your passions and toys. :)

I think that Optima could be loaded in a manner for her to shoot very comfortable. And with the thumbhole stock they claim (as I do not own one) that they are a pleasure to shoot. So that might really be a good rifle.

You could have another rifle in the house, a range buddy, a hunting buddy, it just don't get no better then that. Although check Cabela's and some of the other sites, especially their bargain caves and see what rifles they have there. If you find a good deal.. just don't tell me.. :D

I love the thumb hole stock on my Pro Hunter.I would also look at the Wolf loaded w/ 65 80 grains of T7 or lower on the BH209. Very comfortable to shoot w/ a nice butt pad, smaller framed gun.Cayugad, you scared me there I thought you were serious about taking the wife hunting!!!![8D] My wife hunted CF w/ me then we had a daughter and she quit. Now my daughter is showing interets in hunting so maybe I will get lucky and she'll join me again. I liked hunitng w/ her. And yea, she showed at camp one year, drand all the beer, took all the poker winnings and then shot the only buck that year! Always tells the uys and theoir wives we don't need a week at deer camp only a day. I'll never live that one down!

Come to think of it, my wife shot a deer on her first day everhunting. A couple guys at the camp felt a little wormy about it, she caught on and asked if they wanted her to shoot them one too. They laughed and got over it.

She tells me I don't need to hunt so much just to get a deer, I must just want to get out of the house. I tell her, "You could be on to something hon, let you know when I get back." When I get back I tell her, "I ain't figured it out yet, need to go tomorrow and work on it some more".

RE: The wife

When I was married my wife insisted she go deer hunting with me. It was cold as I remember, and snow all over the place. I sat her down on a bucket next to me and watched her shiver and told her to be quiet and not chatter her teeth. A nice buck came walking up the trail towards us. I got the safety off, and was about to raise up when she immeditately stood up and yelled "Run for your life he has a gun!" She then looked at me with this shocked look on her face, told me she was very sorry and would go back to the house.
