Swapping barrels on the Renegade
I have a T/C Renegade .50cal 1:48 twist that I am planning on using with the iron sights next season when I hunt in the thicket where i hunt (30-50 yard shots). I am thinking about buying a GMB .54cal 1:70 twist in which I am planning on using PRB and installing a scope because I will have shots on average 75-100 yards with apossibility of a 100-150 yards (if its a trophy buck and the conditions are right). Anyway if I sight in the .50cal barrel and pop out the wegde pin install the .54cal barrel and sight it in with the scope can I switch barrels throughout the season without losing the zero on each barrel?

RE: Swapping barrels on the Renegade
Hey shooter, both barrels should hold zero. What you would be doing is no different than taking a barrel off of a Renegade to clean it.
If you don't mind an un-asked for opinion, I would go just the opposite of what you plan. Why not use iron sights on the .54 with balls. Perfect for your 50 yard shots, but also goodfor 100 yards easily. Put the scope on the .50 barrel and work up the hottest load you can with something like Hornady's FPBs and get it dialed in for long shots. |

What I did was get a 1-28 .50 caliber barrel and scoped that. It shoots as good as any inline rifle out there. I really like the way it shoots. I also have a 1-70 .58 caliber that shoots roundball real accurate.

Im been thinking about that option also, but as of now Im leaning towards the .54cal round ball as the main barrel that I will be using I just love the preformance of the round ball. Ive watched my dad for years shootdeer with his hawken .54 cal round ball. it just plugs a hole but the best blood trails Ive ever followed.

What is the effective range of a 54cal round ball on a deer?

RE: Swapping barrels on the Renegade
I have the GMB .54 slow twist barrel on my Renegade that I shoot round ball with. To be honest I never take a shot past 75 or 80 yards MAX. I am sure I am just being way conservative but that's just how I am and I feel more comfortable inside about 60 yards.

ORIGINAL: shooter50 What is the effective range of a 54cal round ball on a deer? If you are in the wide open to get that 150yd shot, any significant wind with the terrible BC of a PRB is going to have to be adjusted for. |

ORIGINAL: shooter50 What is the effective range of a 54cal round ball on a deer? ![]() With a max load of 120 grains, I feel that i can easily reach out to 200 yards and cleanly take a deer or an elk with a single shot. People often underestimate the round ball. |

Mountaindevil - I really like that rifle. That is pretty.
