cleaning supplies
I got my genesis but haven't had a chance to shoot yet. Hopefully this weekend. Going to go to the store tomorrow to get the rest of my supplies. What kind/brand of cleaning supplies would you recommend (bore cleaner, action cleaner, ect). I have alcohol to clean between shots.

RE: cleaning supplies
also, any good tips for getting those breech plug threads clean in the barrel? I was just cleaning the factory greese out of it and it was tough.

RE: cleaning supplies
old tooth brushes work real good for cleaning the breech plug.

RE: cleaning supplies
Cleaning supplies sort of depend upon what powder you are going to use. My first recommendations are always a good range rod and lots of cleaning patches.
You'll need Hoppe's #9 or similar good solvent if using BH209. You can get by with soap and water for most of the rest - just be sure everything is completely dry then give a coating of good protectorant such as Breakfree CLP, or RemOil, or Sheath (or whatever they call it now). Straight baby bottle brushes will work on the barrel threads in a pinch, but be ready to expend some elbow grease. A good brush set augmented bytoothbrushes, toothpicks, q-tips, pipe cleaners, rags, and more sweat will all find a use. A good breech plug lube can do double duty to lube the firing pin insert (don't forget to clean there, it's easy on a Genesis). You'll need to collect a couple of small containers such as butter tubs to soak plugs and small parts, a bucket if you use hot water, and an undisturbed spot to do your cleaning. :D |
RE: cleaning supplies
I like to use either Remington Action Cleaner spray or Shotgun Cleaner spray on the breech plug threads of the barrel. Either of those will blast any grease right out of there. I'm sure brake parts cleaner would do the same thing. I like RemOil as far as lubrication and preservation goes. CLP is good too but it kind of stinks. I use Remington Express Clean spray solvent for the bore after shooting. That's because I shoot BH209 which requires a solvent to clean. If you use any of the other BP subs, you can use water to clean. You'll definitely want to get some 2 1/2" bore patches. Those are perfect size for a .50 cal muzzleloader.

RE: cleaning supplies
thanks. I got some break free clp, some rem action cleaner for the trigger and I tried some engine degreaser with a toothbrush on the breech plug and it cleaned it right up. I want to try bh209 since everyone seems to like it but all the stores around here are picked over from hunting season and christmas. I couldn't even find a bullet starter. I bought some pyrodex pellets for now. When they stock up I'll try the bh209. We have 40 mph wind gusts today so I'm going to go to the range another day.
