RE: what to do for storage

I clean it just like I normally do after a day in the field (ie REALLY GOOD) and then do one additional thing I don't do usually -- pull the action from the stock and clean/oil it.

I know some people pull the scope and mounts to clean the nooks and crannies and underneath, I've never done that. Sighting in is a chore. In all the times I've pulled scopes to replace or swap, I've never noticed any rust or corrosion resulting from skipping that step.

Heck I do that with all my guns that I've used after the season. All the dirt, debris, moisture and whatever that gets in there needs to be removed and a fresh, light coat of gun oil on the metal.
As for putting themin storage - I use them all year long so I don't'store' them.

Same here. My cartridge rifles get cleaned, oiled and put up `til next fall. But my MLs get shot all year long (well, except July and August).

all my guns, if i hunted in rain, i use spray oil that you like, i use sheaths and spray under sights and peeps and the actions etc.

i take stock off when i do this.

shotguns always rust under rib on top for example.

i dont remove scope/sights.

breakfree clp is one of best for inside barrel or actions in my opinion.

but i dont use it on the outside of barrels, i use sheaths or rem oil..

clp leaves a teflon coating which dulls finish on outside of gun,i dont like that.

RE: what to do for storage

The important thing is to clean the inside and outside of the barrel real well. If you believe there could be things under the bases of the rifle, then by all means take then off and clean under them. Personally I never do. All my rifles are with quick release rings so they stay in place.

But once I am sure there is no trace of fowling that I can see... On the outside of the rifle I spray it down with Birchwood Casey Sheath a.k.a. Barricade. I let that sit on the outside of the rifle and wipe it off leaving a good solid coat. The inside of the bore, I like to use Sheath or Break Free CLP.

Some people break the rifle down.. ie; remove the bolts, breech plugs, springs so they are not under tension... since I shoot my rifles all year round I do not.

I just started with a product called Montana X-treme Bore Conditioner but like I said, just started and have not formed an opinion on it. One thing that kind of startled me.. I thought the rifle was spotless and yet this stuff pulled some oxidation out of the bore. I never would have guessed that was in there, but that can be the only explanation of the black smudge that came on the patch as I am positive the bore was clean and bright. More to follow on this product.
