sabot/bullet question
 

I thinking about switching loads this year. After reading some of these posts I'm thinking about either Parker 275 or Nosler 300gr, what i was curious about was a lot of folks say they use crushed rib sabots. is this a description or a brand, who makes and sells these and are these a good choice with eith of these two bullets. thanks for any info.

Harvester crushed rib sabots are made a bit thinner then others so in rifles that load hard, these will help the ease of loading. They are made by Harvester sometimes called Claybuster/Harvester in both the green which are .430 and the black which are .452

I have used Nosler Partitions 300g with CR sabots ever since they came out. The are for sale here:

Noslers are great bullets and expand on meat not bone, just the head expands. They keep nearly 100% of weight, I believe they and the Barnes MZ are the perfect <=100 bullet, actually if you sight in 3" high at 100, you can shoot to about 150 yards no problem. Great accuracy in my Omega, <1.5" all the time. 100g of 777. They have grooves so they are easy to load, like this:



I used the Parker Ballistic Extreme all last year in my Savage, I got I believe 8 deer. The bullet is .450 so they will be very loose with the reguar CR sabot. They were very accurate in my Savage, but I found they fragemented on bone hits, so I switched to Barnes Origonal 300g with Black CR sabot.Would I use them again, no there are better bullets out there like theBarnes origonal 300g. Are they OK,yes. They are great for long range. I just didn'tlike them on 40 yard brisket shots. I am pickey.Barnes MZ 300 for <=100. SW 300gfor150 yard shots.

Chapman, when you used the noslers were you using the protected point or hollow point bullets? Also you had good things to say about Nosler but your final statements sounding like you prefer barnes and shockwaves.Most of my shots will be 150 yards or less. I use triple 7 and a knight mk85 which i does me so well I have a hard time justifying getting a new gun.Which of the 3 bullets you mentioned do you like as an all round bullets at the 150 yd or less rangel, thanks for the help,

For 150 yards or less, the best all around bullet isthe Nosler 300g HG. Sight in either of them 3" high at 100 and your be good to about 170 yards or so. The Nosler is a flat nosed bullet, not a true hollow point. Flat nosed bullets have tremendious killing power, since like a flat stone hitting a pond, it splashes big, same with a Nosler Partion HG. Big splash is big wound channel on entry into the animal. They are $54 for 50 at Mid South. You can buy the Jim Shockey packages for about $1.00 each also. I used the Barnes Expanded MZ with supplied sabot in my Omega this year and got excellent terminal performance, however the Noslers have been around for 50 years and they are proven bullet with great accuracy.So of the 3 bullets I believe the Nosler is the "best", only because it has been around longer and is proven. Neck and neck is the Barnes Expander MZ 300g, we may have to go to all copper in some states, so this could be your opportunity to try these first (you can buy 15 or 20 to try) and see if you get great accuracy. If you do go with that.

They are OK for deer, but I have found that 250 and 260g bullets don't shoot thru a deer, including Noslers, especially on bone hits. I am not saying they don't kill and I am not saying they are not a good bullet. I just don't use them because IALWAYS want shoot thru and 300g gives me that every time. More energy on the 300g.

I just ordered 50 of each. Whats strange about all this is that I have almost gone back to where I started; I started out 20 years agowith speer 45cal 260 gr hollowpoint pistol bullets. they would clobber deer at less then a hundred yards.Then i tried multiple bullets designed for muzzleloaders;barnes red hot-my gun absolutely would not shoot this bullet, powerbelt 245,260 and 270s. this year i gave precision bullet solid lead bullets a try. they were accurate in my gun and i never got a hot at a deer with them.I have always been kind of apprehensive to solid lead bullets from i hear on these websites about rapid expansion to the point of fragmenting.i love my mk85 but if my overtime keeps up then i may be getting a triumph, i think these bullets would be a good choice. thanks for al your help.
