Bore cleaner

Has there been anyone to use BH 209 long enough to know the best bore cleaner?

cayugad 12-19-2008 09:05 PM

RE: Bore cleaner

BlackHorn 209 suggests Montana X-treme solvent. I used Hoppies #9 and Birchwood Casey Bore Scrubber. Both worked real good to take the Black Horn out of the barrel. The worst part to clean for me was the breech plug.

Thanks cayugad.

I've used Hoppes #9 and plain ol' rubbin' alcohol. Both work equally well for me.

RE: Bore cleaner

I run a patch - both sides-with simple green first to get out the bulk of
the fowling - anything wet would probably work for this.

Then a patch with the hoppes #9 - sometimes a second is needed, but not always.
Then an alchohol patch to remove all the #9.
Dry patch to dry the barrel and to verify dead clean.
Patch with Barricade/sheath - use same patch to wipe exterior and all other metal and done.

Montana Extreme , Montana BH209[ which is what they made for it but very had to get] and a 50 /50 mix of Hoppes #9 and alcohol which is what I like best it cheap very effective dries very fast and I have been using it for some time with no problems, I think it cleans better and faster than any thing else I have tried. While cleaning the rifle, I boil some water, put the bp in a can in the sink with a little dish soap and pour the water over it.
After cleaning the barrel, I rinse the bp, open the primer end with a 1/8 drill bit, clean the outside with qtips and a tootbrush.
Dry well and run the patch with the Barricade over it.

Easiest way to clean the breechplug is to spray it with Windex with vinegar (the clear Windex) and brush it all the crud away with a toothbrush. Clean the hole under the primer with pipe cleaners and/or a hand turned drill bit. Takes all of 2-3 minutes.

We were warned not to use water but that we should use regular smokeless powder solvents by Western when they published the first info on Blackhorn 209.
Yes it is rubbing alcohol but watch the percentage it is best to keep it above 90 because the rest is water and may leave moisture if the percentage is to low.
Breach plug, I use the same mixture on the breach plug I just put some on a rage and wipe it off but you do need to clean the carbon out from between the 209 seat and the touch hole, a drill is the best way, I just have a 10 dollar flash light battery drive screwdriver from Walmart that comes with a 1/8 inch drill and tt only takes a second that way. For BH cleaning stick with the regular smokeless products... the only place they might fail you is with the breech plug... BH cruds them up very well with a very hard substance.. That is why most have gone to turning a drill bit on the insideof the BP to remove this residue.

These Montana Xtreme products are very good...

Hot water bath then Butch's Bore Shine. Once its patched clean, Birchwood Casey lube and put it to bed.

If the question orinally posted remains.

I really do not think you want to use any water when cleaning BH-209. It is a smokeless progressive burning powder is not a normal black Powder sub -

CLEANING

Triple Seven fouling has been relatively easy to get out of the bore, using nothing more than water. In fact, on one management doe hunt, I cleaned my rifle every evening with just saliva-dampened patches. And on that hunt, I took 11 does in 5 days. However, like quite a few shooters, I have never been all that crazy about cleaning the bore of a tack-driving rifle with water or water-based soapy solutions.

Truth is, you do not want to use water or water-based soapy solution to clean out what little Blackhorn 209 fouling that's left in the bore. It tends to turn the fouling to a sticky surface in the bore. Instead, to clean away this fouling, it takes just one or two patches dampened with a modern bore solvent, such as good ol' Hoppe's No. 9. (Western Powders has also developed one of its "Montana Extreme" cleaning solvents expressly for Blackhorn 209.) With Triple Seven powder, some shooters (including your's truly) have experienced difficulties getting stuck breech plugs out of rifles. Thanks to the non-building tendencies of Blackhorn 209 fouling, with just a light coat of grease type lubricant on the threads of a breech plug, that problem could be a thing of the past.

Both powders are non-corrosive. However, Hodgdon Powder Company warns that Triple Seven fouling does tend to draw moisture if left in the bore or on other metal surfaces for any length of time. During my testing last fall, I hunted several months with the same rifle and Blackhorn 209, not cleaning the rifle once - even though the muzzleloader was fired a hundred or more times during that period. When I did tear it down for cleaning, the breech plug came right out...and the bore was wiped spotless with two modern solvent dampened patches. In short, the rifle cleaned up in basically the same time it takes to clean the same rifle after a single afternoon at the range.

I am going to pick out a rifle and use this Montana X-treme Bore Treatment I bought. I just have to decide what rifle and then how to prepare the rifle for it. From my understanding you have to clean the rifle bore with solvent, and then dry it, and after that use the treatment, then basically shoot the treatment out. Is that right?

RE: Bore cleaner

Dave,

Which product did you get?

Bore Solvent

Bore Cleaning

Bore Conditioner

I have the Bore Conditioner and your application description is good. The bore must be clean and dry... Then apply the Conditioner.

A little bit on a patch goes a very long ways. Run your patch several times in the bore. Every time I do it I still get a small hint of dis-coloration on the patch... Most important - do not leave excess conditioner in the bore. Just a smige on a patch will do the job.

Then before firing run a tight clean patch through the bore and you are off to the races. I run a couple to make sure I am not getting any product out of the barrel.

Looking forward to a report on your results Cayugad. What is that bore conditioner supposed to do for you - make cleaning easire, improve accuracy, or both???

If it's supposed to enhance accuracy, I suggest you shoot a few 5-shot groups withtwo or three different loads inthe gun before treatment, then shoot groups with with the sameloads after treatment. Of course, weWILL expect pictures. :D

I have been using the bore cleaner to remove BH209 I use it on my other guns it takes out every thing. This is an ammonia based product. I have not used the bore conditioner.

RE: Bore cleaner

Semi

I am thinking the Bore Conditioner will make that much difference in one application or even two - I think it might take a few applications. It does contain eather so it will evaporate very rapidly + if applied correctly will leave a very thin layer of bore protection.

I have only used it in the Omega and now and one application on the Disc Extreme which I am hunting with now. I did get one range session in with the Omega after treating the bore, can not say I saw a tremendous change in accuracy but I do believe there was less fouling. I used the same windex patch for 7 shots before it completly dried out and got stiff.

Yes, I bought the Montana X-Treme Bore Conditioner.4ounce bottle of it.
I just have to decide which one gets the treatment...

cayugad is the one that turned me on to birchwood casey. I have a CVA Optima and you can tear down the trigger assembly. I spray inside the trigger and firing pin area and the powder just drips out. I then use air compressor to make sure all is out.

I havea bottle of the Birchwood Casey Bore Scrubber, have never used, it claims to remove All types o fouling, will try.
