what should I use for my next ramrod
I am needing an new ramrod for my hawkens.
I am wanting to use copper pipe the same dia. (kinda of an brass look)
just do an dow rod and make one out of wood (stain it close to the color of the gun)
then I have a couple of the tc cheap replacements I could use, just a little modding.
what yall think
oh yeah, welcome home kelly, scott "ACCURA"

careful with wooden dowels.. I have seen them snap when you put pressure on them. Be sure and check the grain in them for flaws. Normally they are good, but you're dealing with a rather thin one.
If you could find some solid aluminum rod and have the ends tapped. But really with all the monkeying around.. I would just purchase one.

http://www.cainsoutdoor.com/shop/product.asp pick super-rods hunter from the drop down. Pick one that fits. They come in black or black but you could probably paint one with Krylon fusion paint.
And get a bore guide for that other thing while you're there. http://www.cainsoutdoor.com/shop/item.asp?item=18701
or, for a brass ramrod (HEAVY) http://rmcsports.com/catalog.htm select Ramrods and Accessories - Brass ramrods.

RE: what should I use for my next ramrod
i use my wooden ones just for looks.
for hunting i use ones from wal-mart made of plastic.
at range, i use t/c brass ones from wal-mart for round ball shooting.
wal-mart has started their sales this week on guns and supllies.
i bought 5 boxes of 490 roundballs for 9 dollars each.
buy as much of these as you can because word out is LEAD is going to be hard to get and may be outlawed someday.
china was buying as much lead as was produced.
i read article that lead could be gone by 2017.
also buy up all bricks of 22 cal bullets also.
i bought 10 bricks for my browning buckmark pistol.

This is a field rod I turned on a lathe which consist of a 3/8" fiberglass rod, the handle and tip were turned out of 1/2" round brass rod and the tip tapped 10-32. The same can be done making one to fit the rifle but would make it with a brass rod, aluminum unless a good coating is applied will make hands nasty.http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...8/100_1420.jpg

What's wrong with a good hickory ramrod for you Hawkens???
I've got one on my .40 flintlock that I bought in '75, haven't broken it yet...The one on my .54 has been there since the 80s...I will admit that when I go to the range, I do use a range rod that I made 20 years ago from 1/2 inch hickory...
While we are on it...I grab my ramrod about 4-5 inches above the muzzle and push down, then go for another 4-5 inches...I've seen some try to push the ball down a foot at the time...

if you soak your rods for year, they get real hard and will last.
i use t/c rod at range and fiberglass one for hunting.
at home, i use wooden ones for looks.
