Sidelocks
Anyone besides me use a sidelock?
I shoot a Traditions Panther in 50 cal with teflonpatch and homemade .490round ball, 65 grains Hodgdon Tripple 7 2f powder. Spudrow from Mo |
RE: Sidelocks
Lots of us shoot sidelock rifles.. and people are crazy about them. Those panthers were kind of like the CVA Bobcat if memory serves me.

RE: Sidelocks
I know what you mean. Ido not have an inline but don't have anything against them. I just like conventional I guess. It seems to be more of a challenge as well.

RE: Sidelocks
love hunting with the ol sidelocks and flinters. For some reason, when i carry a sidelock i feel more into the woods, more into the hunt.
With an inline i dont get that feeling. |
RE: Sidelocks
One thing is for sure. You take better aim and concentrate more. Or at least I did.

RE: Sidelocks
I own a dozen Black Powder guns... and only 1 is an inline, the rest are Percussion & Flintlocks. I LIKE my Encore a LOT... but I LOVE my sidelocks!

RE: Sidelocks
As you already see Spudrow, you're certainly not alone in your affection for sidelocks. My collection includes one in-line and a half-dozen sidelocks. I like them all, even like my(sshhh!) cartridge guns. But I would never tell the others that I love the sidelocks more, even though I do.

RE: Sidelocks
The words "Inline" and "sabot" to me are blasphemy... I currently have a T/C White Mountain Carbine which was a birthday present from my parents a couple of decades back, A Lyman GPR I built last winter and I am currently awaiting the arrival of my Pre-Rev Pennsylvania Flintlock Kit from Pecatonica River, I went all out on this kit... I cannot wait... It's a long winter in Michigan...

RE: Sidelocks
I love my sabot shootin inlines but I still get a kick from my sidelocks.
Lyman GPH .50 shooting a Bullshop 460gr conical atop 80gr of Goex 2F and a Lyman GPR .54 flintlock with 1 in 60 twist for rb's. I need to play with the flinter a little more. I got sidetracked last year due to work. |
RE: Sidelocks
Between me and my boys we have 4 inlines and 4.5 sidelocks (one is flint). I like them all. The .5 sidelock is the 50 GPH barrel I have for my 54 GPR. I am in the process of looking for another GPRstock to permanently place the GPH barrel into. I know I can swap them but it's more fun to just pick up one or the other instead. My GPH is one of the most accurate guns I have. It shoots groups as well as my scoped inlines using the peep setup I have on it. I have the same basic setup on my White inline and it does well also. There's nothing wrong with the sidelocks and all of them can be a kick in the pants to shoot.

RE: Sidelocks
Love sidelocks. Have a White Mtn carbine in .50 with green mountain barrel and a T/C Hawken in .54. Someone elses kit that i'm trying to sort out.

RE: Sidelocks
Up until recently all I had were sidelocks - either flint or percussion. But thanks to this forum I got tempted to the 'dark side' and got an inline. It shoots plenty good enough, but I still have an admiration toward the sidelocks.

RE: Sidelocks
Trust me Chap, You load up that .54 and drop the hammer on a deer, you'll love the performance of that .530 round ball. With my charge i shoot, 150 yards is a piece of cake should the wind be in my favor.

RE: Sidelocks
I have a T/C New Englander that may get a trial this January for the late winter antlerless season in IL (if my wife lets me go). 90 grains of RS and and a 385 grain Hornady Great Plains conical.

RE: Sidelocks
I like my Lyman 54 cal GPH. I shoot Minie bullets out of it with a load of 2F Goex behind them. I can't imagine trading all that for an inline stainless removable plug, primer gun!
I still don't see the attraction about shooting 3 pellets and a plastic bullet! YMMV |
