T/C Renagade .50 1/48" Twist
Think I'm going to breakthe Ol' Renagade out of the safe for our late season ML hunt. Got a couple of weeks but have not burned powder in this one for many years. She's in great shape and ready to go but I have not been able to find my data from years gone by. Was looking to see if anyone has any pet loadings for hunting or suggestion for a begining loading fordevelopment for hunting service with todays components out of a traditional cap lock ML.

Real simple. A 385 grain Hornady Great Plains conical over 80 grains Pyrodex RS.

I always had delayed ignition with pyrodex with my TC Hawken.Did you change out the standard nipple with something else?

RE: T/C Renagade .50 1/48" Twist
90 grains of goex and a patched round ball. We have taken many deer with this combo out of2 super cheap CVA plainsman sidelocks over the years. Very accurate load for us.

RE: T/C Renagade .50 1/48" Twist
A buddy of mine says switching from subs to Goex eliminated hangfires for him in his percussion sidelock. But I suspect his problems with subs were more a reflection of his cleaning habits (or lack thereof) than with the powder. I've seen him clean it, and it wasn't nearly thorough enough for my taste, especially around the nipple & "snail". I know others with percussions that have no issues with Pyrodex. In fact, one of them shoots an old Renegade.
I'm a prb guy myself, but that's about necessary since I have the 1:66" twist. Those Great Plains look plenty mean enough... can't imagine anything going far after a decent hit with one of 'em. October Sky... read the book (Rocket Boys)? |
RE: T/C Renagade .50 1/48" Twist
I use T7 and Goex pinicale in my percussion guns it works well with a cci mag cap. I like the Goex easy clean up and I can make many shots with out cleaning

RE: T/C Renagade .50 1/48" Twist
I would go with the great Plains bullet 90gr T777 and either a remington cap or winch. mag cap. That will take out anything you can get near . That's what i shoot in my 54 cal. As long as your renegade likes the combination it will do the job. You may want to experiment a little to see what gives the best groups.

RE: T/C Renagade .50 1/48" Twist
90 gr Pyrodex RS and 370 gr Maxiball.
If you are getting delayed ignition with loose Pyrodex, you are most likely not compressing it adequately. Push the bullet down until it contacts the charge, then compress. It may go another eigth to a quarter of an inch on the ramrod. These are not pellet rifles as far as I know. |
RE: T/C Renagade .50 1/48" Twist
I have used T7 and other BP subs but for my gun the Goex REAL BP works best. T7 is not too far behind and I dont hesitate to use it when needed. I shoot round ball since I have a slower twist barrel. The key to any Muzzy is... keep them CLEAN and DRY and getting them to pop won't be a problem.
