May be buying a .45 CVA Kodiak. Why??? I dont need another ML. But what Ive been thinking is shooting a .358 rifle bullet with it. I reload for my .357max my 35 rem & 35 whelen. So Ive always got .358 bullets on hand. Im thinking a 200 grain rem corloct or a 180 grain Hornady SSP would be the perfect deer bullet at 1800 to 2000 FPS. 35 rem velocities. Has any one else done this or thought about it. I cant be the first guy to think about this. Im not that smart. So what do you guys think. Im fairly new to MLs so would this work or why wouldnt it work. Thanks Jay. Any exspermenting will be done after this season.

Don't waste your money or time. The only way it will work is if you have a barrel twist of 1:15 or 1:16. It just will not stabilize with a 1:28 or more twist :( ( Done all this testing with my 45cal Disc Elite)

IF you could get a SHORTER 150-170grain 358 spire point, it MIGHT stabilize, it's all about the Length at this cal. The PRBullet 45/357 cal Orange sabots(Made by MMP for PRBullet folks) are the strongest--AND longest sabots available.

But know this, the 200g SST/Shockwave can be pushed to 2450fps with 130gV=93.6gW of BH209 into a 1.5-2inch group at 120 yards ;)
Do Not be mislead by other reports, This is a VERY tough bullet, and all the deer we have shot, go down like they were hit with a high power 30cal rifle:)
And so far we have only used 90g of BH209 with a speed of ONLY 1950fps...out to 150yards.

Lee is absolutly correct, when he says that the 200g Shockwave is best when fired with at LEAST 1950-2200fps...Because this bullet can take the speed, and deals out incredible penetration and Hydrostatic shock:D;)

No, they are too long to be stabilized. When fired, they will always Key-Hole, or tumble down range. Like a football that is kicked instead of thrown with a spiral. I've tried the Orange PRBullet and MMP Blue 45/357 cal sabots.

The sabots will usually have a 357 size hole punched right thru the base. Even with sub-bases and all ranges of loads-slow to hot, they just don't stabilize.

I've still got about 80 Hornady .358 35 CAL 200 GR SP's left and both sabots, I could send ya 10 or 20 and you can try them your self.

Been there, done that, no go. Even tried filing down some 50 BMG / .308 sabots to fit in a ML and shoot 125gr Ballistic Tips. Result was either a keyhole or bullet not separating from the sabot at all (much different sabot design of course).

If you want to do that, you'll have to do what some guys are doing and making a custom ML with faster twist. But most of those guys are swaging/knurling bullets to shoot them sabotless as ML sabots seem not to work well in faster twist guns -- I think they start jumping the rifling.

Well I just bought the CVA.45. I paid $175 for it . It comes with a Nikon prostaff 2X7 & some other assessories, I LL switch out the scope to a Burris 3X9 & start playing with it(Trying some different bullets) after Season.Ive got 50 or so 180 grain Gold dots. Any suggestions. Once again thanks Im thinking you guys saved me alot of time & money.

I've shot them with about 70g of powder and with MMP Tan 45/40 sabots and got good groups.
But when I tried some of the Green sabots that are supplied with the 200g Shockwave's, I was getting 1.5 inch groups;)

I also fired some at High speed, with 130g BH209, and got 2490fps and 1.5--2inch groups. I would think that 70-100g BH would be all you needed, cause that hollow point is HUGE;) I feel it would open REAL fast;)

The 200g 10mm/40cal XTP gives me MOA with MMP Tan sabots, shoots better than the Gold Dots IMO.

I'd agree with Lane that the .40 cal 200 grain XTP is a good place to start - seems to shoot well out of most .45's. It also is an excellent performer on deer. The 200 grain SST is another good choice to try out. Both shoot consistently under 2" groups at 100 yards in my CVA .45. If you have some Gold dots already, go ahead and try them out. I personally wouldn't push them super, super fast- I would worry about overexpansion. But with a moderate powder charge they should do great on deer.
