50 Cal Conical for Colorado?
What is the best conical to use on elk in Colorado?
50 cal 1 in 28" twist? |
RE: 50 Cal Conical for Colorado?
You might want to try some Bull Shop conicals, No Excuses Conicals, Powerbelts, it all depends on the brand of rifle you are shooting. Often the slip fit Bull Shop do real well.

I used a 460g Bullshop for my elk hunt this year in CO and it performed beautifully. I highly recommend them.

I switched to the new Hornady FPB conical and had great luck on elk with them. However, with the plastic tip in place, they are too long to be legal for Colorado. So I cut them off flush with the front end of the metal and they still fly great and are legal! 3 inch groups at 100 yards with open sights. And they performed great on the elk as well.
Bullshop, no excuses, and maxiballs are good as well if your gun will shoot them. IMO the powerbelts would be my last choice. If you use them, be sure and don't use over 100 grains of black powder equivalent. Push them too hard and they come apart. |

I would try what ever you can of the ones mentioned and use what your gun shoots best.

I cast a 525 grain conical in 50 caliber for elk. I have used this bullet in CO. But I am not 100% sure the bullet is legal. CO has some weird law about diameter versus overall length. So be careful.
I did have a CO-conservation officer check our licenses once in CO. But he did not look at or even ask about our projectiles. All he was concerned about was a hunters safety card, and our tags. Tom. |

FPBs get my vote if your gun shoots them well.

To be Colorado legal, the bullet can not be longer than twice the width. In other words, a bullet can't be over 1 inch in a 50 caliber or 1.08 inches in a 54 caliber.

Bullshop's 50s ( http://home.mchsi.com/~rltsr/bullshop.jpg) from the 400 grain to the N373 500 grainer are all Colorado legal and meet the 2X rule. That 460 grain MT NEx is a great choice. Dan is using a lube now, he calls it NASA lube and it is reported to be outstanding.
