150 or 100 grains of powder?
 
I recently traded for a TC Pro Hunter 50cal. M/L with a Nikon BDC scope ... I have dialed it in at 1inch high at 100 yards using a Power Built 245 grain bullet and 150 grains of powder (3 powder pellets) .... I was told the other day by a friend who black powder hunts a lot more then I do that I should consider using just 100 grains of powder and that it would not effect the perfomance of the rife that much out to 150 yards ...my question is that with all things being equalconsideringwhat was mentionedabove how much more will the bullet drop just using 100 grains?

If your using power belts don't go over 80 grains of powder they defragment at higher loads a lot of guys have lost deer with them including me

ACCORDING TO BALLISTICS CHART FROM KNIGHT,FOR MY KP1,245 GRAIN BULLET WITH 100 GRAINS OF 777,IF SIGHTED IN AT 100 YARDS,MY BULLET WILL DROP 6.05 INCHES AT 150.SAME BULLET WITH 150 GRAINS WILL DROP 3.85 AT 100 YARDS.THAT'S A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT.WITH THAT SAID,I STILL ONLY SHOOT 100 GRAINS.MOST SHOTS ARE WITHIN 100 YARDS.I DON'T FEEL THAT I NEED TO SHOOT 150 GRAINS.BEFORE THE SO CALLED MAGNUM MUZZLE LOADERS CAME OUT,WE ALL TOOK OUR DEER WITH 100 GRAINS OR LESS.SHOOT WHAT YOU FEEL IS COMFORTABLE TO YOU.

Your friend is correct. The BDC sope is designed primaily for a high ballistic coefficienct bullet like the 250g Shock Wave, not the 245g PB. PBs fragment at high velocity, basically anything over 80g---1400 fps is about right for this bullet. You should switch to a >>>strong<<<< bullet, if you are shooting fields and long range shot to 200 yards try the 300g SW or the Barnes TMZ 290g. Also if your only shooting 150 yard max shots, you can shoot a Nosler Partition, a Speer Gold Dot, a Barnes Origonal or a Barnes Flat Nose 45843, Barnes MZ all at 300g and sight in 3" high at 100 and be within 3" low to 175 yards. I am sure you know this from your Center Fire experience, basically your shooting a 300g 45/70 bullet with similar ballistics.

80gr max with the 245's. If you want to use 100gr, i highly suggest either the 270 or 300gr platinum.

At what yardage though?? I have been testing the 295 gr. hollow points out to 100 yards and I am not noticing any fragmentation in the target at all...

Terminal velocity at the deer is the concern.A hot-loaded PB may fragment upon impact witha deer at 40 yds, but may perform perfectly on a deer at 150 yds. Problem is, you don't know how far your shots at game will be, so you need a bullet that works well at all a range of velocities/ranges.

Hornady claims their FPB does this, though I can only vouch for 2 shots, 80 yds and about 40 yds. Complete pass-throughs, which is what I want. The bullet seems to be plenty strong.
