Hogs on The Place

One of our places is 70 miles from where we live and we do not get there very often. That 80 acreplace has about 25-30 acres of the best big bluestem grass in OK and the rest is woods with big gullies and thickets. The deer love the place and we do our best to make it a deer sanctuary. Never killed a deer there myself. My son has killed a few deer there and i want to keepthe placenice for him and my grand-daughters.

Killed onehuge hog there a couple of years ago. That was a domestic hog that had probably not beenferal for very long.Have seen very few hogsand little hog sign on the place.

Now the hogs are wallowing in the pond, eating under the feeder and rooting up the oats plots. Pretty soon they willhave an adverse impact on the deer there.

Looks like i will have to visit the place more often and maybe pop some hogs under the feeder.

While I have read studies on the effects of feral or wild hogs in an area, and that people without hog problems are better off, I justsomehow envy those that have hog problems. The State of Wisconsin has launched a kill them if you see them kind of policy for the hogs that they believe were planted in the southwestern corner of the State, and now advancing areas of the state.

Just the opportunity to hunt them for free would to me, be a blessing of sorts. People such as myself who want to hunt a wild or free ranging feral hog normally have to pay for access to the kind of property and opportunity you describe.

I guess if it were me, I would be eating lots of pork or making sure the local food pantry for the needy would be well stocked with pork.

I hate to hear that Falcon. Hogs are an animal that you love to see on SOMEONE ELSE'S land but not yours. I was always told "If you see 5 hogs on your place, shoot 10 of them" They are a distructive creature that is for certain. We never had hogs in VA but when I moved to TN I got an up-close and first hand exposure to their distructive effects.

As Dave said, I'd make sure I had the local foodbank stocked and hey, look at it as a chance to experiment with different loads and bullets.;)

It sounds like they are spreading into your area. I live on the AR side of the border, what part of OK is Comanche co. in? Lee

Cayugad: Just come down to OK andi will take you on some totally free hog hunting excursions. Best to get herein April when the wheat is headed out but not yet ripe.

Hogs get a big mouthful of the wheat heads, chaw it up, suck the juice out of it then spit out the nearly colorless fiber. Cleaning one that is gut shotis awful because they are full of green gooey stuff.

They are already all over south western OK. The place i describedis in Garvin county kind of in the center of the state. Our place is about9 miles west of I-35and Pauls Valley.

We have a few spreading this way from down south, [I live on Greers Fairy lake shore] I heard from a friend that lives on the boarder about 100miles south of Fort Smith that they are moving in on him from OK. I love to hunt them, but would prefer to do away from my hunting property they would make a mess of my food plots. Lee

Same here. Had seen only two hogs on the place and very little hog sign until recently. One of those was the biggest wild boar i have ever seen. The other was the big white sow that i killed.Think she was an American Landrace because of her great length.

The state of OK just refuses to get serious about wild hogs. We are not allowed to hunt them at night with a gun and a light. In theory a farmer can get a permit to hunt hogs at night with a light if they are doing crop damage. The permit comes from the game warden.

Some of the OK WMAs are over-run with hogs. Nope, they will not relax the rules and allow folks to kill them with rifles outside of deer season. At one WMA, the DNR did shoot hogs from helicopters. Now there is some talk of hiring "trappers." [:@]
