RE: Need Help with CVA
Wht is not very well, 4" groups at 100, or 12" groups?
If it is shooting well enough to hunt with, I'd just hunt this year and worry about trying to fing a more accurate load for next year. If the thing won't hit the side of a barn from the inside, you probably have scope issues (if you have a scope) or the gun just does not like that bullet. If you have a scope and iron sights, take the scope off and shoot the irons as a test. If it groups you know it is the scope. If it is not the scope, try another bullet and drop the charge a little. Work up from say 80 grains. |
RE: Need Help with CVA
If the rifle is scoped, check the scope and the mounts.. If you have any doubt of the scope try the iron sights.
What kind of group is it shooting and at what distance are you shooting? First thing I would do is go to loose powder. Pyrodex RS if you can find it. Start with 80 grains of powder and see if the groups do not improve. The other things you can do is try some different weight powerbelts if you are determined to shoot them, or try some XTP, Shockwaves, or some other projectile. All else fails, call CVA and talk to them. Also check to make sure all the locking lugs are tight. |
RE: Need Help with CVA
It is shooting eratic not really grouping.I would say 12 inch groups with open sights. No where near what my Encore dose, whichI borrowed out. i have never shot he powerbelts before. Do the sabots shoot better?
|
RE: Need Help with CVA
12 inch groups at 100 yards would not be acceptable IMO. Since your shooting open sights, perhaps you're pushing the powerbelts too hard, or it just does not like them. I guess at this stage I would get some sabots and projectiles and try that. Or you could see if you can find some maxiball or something like that. I have one .45 caliber rifle. I shoot conicals out of mine, but it is made to shoot conicals. I did purchase a lot of excellent .45 caliber sabot/projectile combinations made by Barnes. These normally shoot well out of most .45 caliber rifles. But again, all you can do is try different things. With my limited experience in a .45 caliber I really do not know what to suggest to you. Perhaps some other forum member can tell you of a good load to try. Good luck. Give CVA a call and see what they suggest. They are pretty helpful people there.

RE: Need Help with CVA
I have had real good luck with 100 grains of BH209, and the Hornady SST/ML 200gr, and Remington STS 209 primer. With a scope, have had shots touching at 50yds. Sabot/bullet also loads very well, not overly tight.

RE: Need Help with CVA
I have an 45cal win apex scoped. it did not like the 223gr powerbelts, shot 270gr, 2 in group at 100yrds, 300gr, did not like them.
try the 270gr powerbelts with 75 to 80grs of loose pryodex rs. also, check to see if your rear site may have came loose. had that happen to me on an sidelock. |
RE: Need Help with CVA
I would check my sights. When I first bought my .45 cal cva kodiak it shot all over the place with the open sights. I tried every load i could think of from 50 grains to 150 and all the bullets i could get my hands on. The front blade on mine would wobble and that was just killing the accuracy. I switched over to a ghost ring peep and everything got alot better.

RE: Need Help with CVA
Do the Power belts normaly shoot good? In my Encore I shoot the PT 235. Precision Technology?
|
RE: Need Help with CVA
powerbelts nomally shoot good out of cva's they were designed for them.

RE: Need Help with CVA
Normally or generally speaking I think most CVA owners can find one Powerbelt that loads and shoots very well out of their rifles. I have a CVA Staghorn Magnum .50 caliber. 90 grains of Pyrodex RS and a 245 grain powerbelt and I could shoot bulls eyes all day with the thing. It for some reason loves that combination. It also shoots the 300 grain XTP very well, and sence they are much more cost effect and I am a cheap so and so.. I shoot them.

RE: Need Help with CVA
being that cva and powerbelt are owned by bpi. you would think they would work and that cva recommends them. it could be it just does not like that weight of bullet. it just not like pellets/powerbelt combo. you really won't know until you start working with other loads.
I really don't like the front site on the cva's they seem to break why to easily. I have 2 knights. one loves powerbelts (likes just about anything I shot out of it) the other gives me 4in groups at 50yrds scoped. |
RE: Need Help with CVA
ditch the pellets and get a pound of pyrodex RS. Try the 275gr copper series aerotip powerbelts or the 225gr powerbelts. Dont go over 80grs of powder with those.
or you can try the 300gr platinum with the 2 pellets. |
RE: Need Help with CVA
I have a CVA .45 - I never could get acceptable accuracy with 777 pellets - that could be part of your problem. With 777 pellets I could get a 4" group at 50 yards, but at 100 yards it was all over the place- nothing you could call a group.
When I switched to loose powder, my groups immediately improved. First season I had it I shot groups with both the 225 grain Powerbelt and 200 grain XTP. With the 225 grain Powerbelt I had the best results using 70 grains loose 777 FFG - groups were about 2.5" at 100 yards with a scope. I would check your sights, make sure everything is staying tight. Then, I'd get some loose powder. If you want to stick with the Powerbelts, I'd start at 60 or 70 grains and work your way up until you find the "sweet spot". If they are legal where you hunt, I'd suggest buying a pack of the 200 grain XTP's and/or a pack of the 200 grain SST's/Shockwaves - these shoot the best out of my .45 - 1.5" 100 yard groups most days. |
RE: Need Help with CVA
I have owned 2 cva guns over the past 5 or 6 years. The 1st wa a cva firebolt ultra mag. The 2nd which i will be useing this year is the cva kodiak pro mag. both gunsareextremly accurate with 2 50 grain hodgdonpyrodex pellets and the .223 powerbelt.
But with that said my Son has a traditions pursuit. I could not get his gun to accuratly shoot the same load as in my other 2 guns. i ended up trying the next bullet size up which was the powerbelt .245. That's all it took, now his gun will hit a softball sized target every time at 100 yds. Try the next bullet size up, it may work. |
