new toy

An old gun shop in town looked like it got a makeover so I dropped in for a look around. I hadn't been in there in years. Figured they were headed for extinction. Wow nice new interior and they even had some ML stuff so I started looking around some more. I noticed a side hammer gun in the rack and checked it out. TC Hawken 54, 1" barrel, 32"twist? I checked it out with the rod and 1/4 turn in 8" =32. It was used but only the brass was a little dark everything else was good. The bore perfect, The hammer totally smooth on the bottom. I don't think it was used much. $275 CDN took it home. I figure 32 might be a little fast for round ball but sabots and conicals should go OK.

If it is a 1 in 32 twist it will be a great conical shooter.I have a Lyman Great Plains 54 cal with that twist and it shoots Hornady great plains conicals with deadly accuracy. Congrats on a great find.

Well that is a good rifle. I never knew that Thompson Center made a 1-32 twist for the Hawkins.. that should be exciting. Keep is posted as to how well it shoots.. That was a good deal.

:) There's nothing better than finding a deal on a fine used sidehammer. Congrats.

I thought all the TC's were 1 in 48

Always nice to find something you don't need at a price so good, you have to take it home. (i.e. my Genesis)
Good find and good luck with it. Give those 435 gr Maxi balls a try. That's almost an ounce of lead. Should knock a deer silly.

Nice price for a Hawken in good shape. I have never heard of the 1:32 twist either, but whatever it is, it will shoot something well.

I can vouch for 435 gr maxiballs on deer. It wilts them in a hurry! My load has always been 100 Pyrodex RS.

OK I did a better measurement with a really tight patch. Wouldn't ya know it is a 48 incher. I stand corrected and happy too. I'll be running round balls as soon as I can get a mould. The local salvage yard sells clean soft lead for 50 cents a pound. One of these days I'll learn how to post a picture. The only wear on it is that somebody dry fired the nipple enough to mushroom the end.
