Filling the butt stock with greatstuff
 

Anyone ever done this to quiet the stock down? My CVA has a hollow stock on it, and I was thinking if you did this, it would make it allot quieter.

I have heard of people doing this with that filler foam. In my CVA Mountain Stalker, it was such a light weight rifle, I put bird shot into the stock and stuffed it with old rags. I put the bird shot in a vacuum sealer bag (twice), put a old clean rag in first, form fitted the bird shot to the stock, and then packed it with more rags. It not only made the rifle quiet, but put a little extra weight in the stock and made it a little more comfortable to shoot.

The good gray packing foam that is used/was used for delicate component shipping is good, as is an old foam mattress pad. Just cut it into chunks and stuff it in until you can't pack it tighter - you might want to use a piece of thick cardboard over the foambeneath the recoil pad so as to keep the foam from deforming the pad.

Great Stuff expands like crazy and would be a nightmare to remove. The packing foam chunks accomplish the same thing without the mess. Dave's method sounds pretty reasonable too.

I did with a the hi-density grey foam rubber that comes packed with computers - but regular foam will work just as well...

How does one fill the stock, are you cutting a hole to place all this stuff in?

Normally, but not always, you remove the butt plate or recoil pad and get to the stock cavity

Not sure what Greatstuff is, but you could use the window+door unsulating spray foam. Be sure to get the stuff for windows, it does not expand greatly (the expanding stuff could cause you problems).

If you want to add weight to the stock at the same time, I have heard of many people mixing birdshot with epoxy and filling the stock with that. Irreversible.

I'm sure it would work but it may give you some problems. One, if you put too much in (it swells) you might have a problem. Secondly, a lot of stocks are held in place by a nut that screws on to a threaded rod from the receiver. If you crack you stock and need to replace it, you may have trouble.
Why not just use foam rubber and stuff it in there?
