CVA Hawken Sidelock, .50 and .54

Picked up this CVA sidelock Hawken Rifle with a 50 and 54 barrel for $100 Wed night, got two boxes of round balls (for the 54), a short starter and a possibles bag along with it. Anyone know the twist on these barrels? There was not manyround ballsmissing from the 54, so I don'tthink it was shot much. I wanna shootGoex in it, what is a good load for the 50? For the .54? Oh, I wanna covert the .54 over to Flintlock, for Penna flintlock season, what is a good source of CVA locks? I was going to buy an L&R lock for it, but that is about a $140 deal: http://www.lr-rpl.com/rplprlst.htm
wanted to get something cheaper.
Chap

Pretty nifty looking rifle Chap. I'd start with 80 gr of FFg over the PRB for the 54 and use a wonder wad over rthe powder. If you need some wads, send me a pm with your address and I will mail them to you. I have a pack or two laying around.

Depending on the age... it might be a 1-66 Douglas barrel. Or it is a 1-48 twist. That's a nice looking rifle there Chap. Heck of a deal. As for changing it over, I guess you would have to contact CVA and see what kind of deal they can make you on a lock...

Personally, I would leave them the way they are. That's almost too nice to change around. Looks like a lot of fun to shoot too...

you got a hell of a deal! .1:48 with the 50cal and 1:66 with the .54cal

for the 54 try 70gr pyrodex RS or Black powder, .015 patch and a .530 round ball.

Contact CVA with the question about converting it over to flintlock. You can get the CVA lock on ebay or gunbroker for around $30 and if it doesnt spark i can hook you up with a guy that rehardens frizzens for $20. He does a damn good job too.

Yea, I saw one on ebay for $33, from Pat's sporting goods up in Michigan. I also did a search on CVA flintlock replacement lock and found a siler kit for $74, says you have to drill out the holes with a drill press, pre-spotted holes. I don't have a press, but I think I can find a friend that does. I have some .015 patches and they guy gave me whole box of .530 and .535 round balls. I was on the CVA web site, but will send their customer support an email.

chap, I am going to guess they are going to send to Deer Creek Products for Parts due to CVA sold most to all of there sidelock parts to them

From there FAQ.

1. Do you still make, carry or repair Side Lock model muzzleloaders like the Hawken/Kentucky/Mountain or Bobcat?
Answer: We Discontinued Side lock muzzleloaders both Pistols and Rifles in 2004 due to lack of demand. We will still continue to offer Mainsprings, Sears, Wedges and Bolsters screws thru the year 2010. Most all other parts have been sold to Deer Creek Products, a service center that is located in Indiana. Deer Creek Products can be reached at 765-525-6181.
