Home brew swabbing question
On the mixtures with windex, simple green, windshield wiper fluid, etc...I notice many saying 91% alcohol as an additive. Why this certain kind/strength? Does the 70% not work as well? It isn't an expense issue, just trying to make some tonight and all I can find is the 70% variety. Thanks in advance.

RE: Home brew swabbing question
If I am going to add alcohol I want as strong an alcohol when I mix it. For straight swabbing with alcohol, the 70% works very good. Again, I mix for the strength. I am sure the other would work well too..

Hammer49
The easiest mixture is just plain old fashioned windex - the blue stuff with ammonia... Ammonia is the active agent and it is a metal cleaner - neutalizes T7 residue on contact.... It is also and excellent cleaning agent to get most of the material out of the barrel prior to the real cleaning. Makes the job really easy. Make your patches just barely damp one patch will last for several shots. If you make them right you will not even need to dry patch... the warmth of the barrel and ammonia will rapidly evaporate any moisture. But it might take you a couple of trys to get the patches just right... ![]() |

Those of us who do not buy pre cut patches.. you can spritz a patch and then ring it out with your fingers. I still run a dry patch afterward.

RE: Home brew swabbing question
Just try straight 91% alcohol for one session. One patch, fairly wet, front and back. No dry patch.
