Ever Cleaned Barrel This Way
At a gun shop about a month ago I talked to a guy I had never met and he said when he cleans his muzzleloader after shooting he uses a range rod and hooks a cordless drill to it.He then uses bore swabs with cleaning solvent and runs them down through the bore using the drill rotation on range rod and said he can completely clean inside of barrel in about 2 minutes. He said he then washes off bore swabs to be used again later.Sounded interesting but I have never done it and wondered what are your thoughts own this method.Does sound promising though if it works. It has been considered, generally, that you should not use a drill to twist clean the bore of any rifle.... There are some possibilties that you could actually damage the bore... |
RE: Ever Cleaned Barrel This Way
I think that would be fine (but totally unnecessary)for a smoothbore.I suppose it would do no harm so long as nothing touches the bore but well saturated swabs, but I wouldn't do it.

I may try it with an old CVA that I've salvaged. Seems like no matter how much I clean, when I run a patch down it the next day there's more crud.

If you want to use a power drill to clean your rifle go right ahead.. after all its your rifle. That just is not something I am going to do.

Cayugad I am not going to do it either! The guy who told me just seemed to like using it ashe said it cleaned his barrel completely clean. If anyone here uses this method it would be interesting to see what results they achieve. But I will admit it did intrigue me though.I will stick to the tried and true method of patching it clean. Ahem, I'm thinking some woodwind players have tries that approach. Maybe they can report:eek::eek:

I hope that guy comes forward :eek::eek:
I'm going to shoot it tomorrow We shall see Vaslugger,I guess you have assumed that it is I who did that very thing just recently, you may view the offending thread here http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=3126923&mpage=1&key=Flitz&#3 126923 The bore was not good so I got a great idea. I must admit, that thing is clean and shiney now. I will shoot it tomorrow and see if I screwed the pooch so to speak. Just a newbie trying to resurect and nice rifle. |
RE: Ever Cleaned Barrel This Way
Nor would I use one. If you think about it, especially if you shoot sabots, what is in your bore? You have powder residue, maybe some unburned powder, and sabot (plastic) residue. So if you are scrubbing across the rifling, you could easily get a buildup, no matter how minor, against the edges of the lands and grooves. Which will affect accuracy. Cleaning parallel to the rifling makes more sense to me anyway. That guy is just too lazy. (Or maybe he's not used to handling a big barrel like the rest of us in here)
