RE: 1st muzzleloader deer
Awesome deer and load! I am sighting in my .54 also and using that as a back up for elk. What kind of groups are you getting at 50 and 100 yards with your set up? Looks like a TC?

Beautiful, .54 with a scope, nice 1st buck, a lotta meat there. I like to get 4 roasts off my bucks, rest into burger or stew meat. Chap

RE: 1st muzzleloader deer
I am kind of surprised that the rifle did not shoot that ball all the way through that deer with that load. Still it did the job. That is the most important thing. What kind of scope do you have on that Renegade? I have a 1X because of the State laws. Otherwise I'd have something much different.
Congratulations on the deer. That is quite the perfect placed shot IMO. |
RE: 1st muzzleloader deer
Was getting about 2.5 " groups at 75 yards but this was after an extended period of sighting in other guns and getting tenderized in the process.Shooting from a picnic table is not the best shooting posture.Too low and you wear all the recoil.Small balloons at 100 yards were no problem so I guess it works. It's fun to put the hunting back in hunting messin with BP!I had 8 does walk by and no tag until this little buck brought up the rear.My son was on the opposite end of the property and had two doe tags.GRRRRRRR! He shot a button WT buck out of his treestand 5 min before I shot this mulie so he's happy. Now we're looking for a cow moose for the wife. It' way to mild here for much game movement....Harold

Congrats! Nice looking buck!

RE: 1st muzzleloader deer
The scope is a 20+ year old Bushnell Banner 4x that is reliable as taxes rode a .338 Win mag to the Yukon.Thrives on recoil abuse! They don't make them like this anymore.Cheap and tough......................As for penetration it powdered the off side shoulder and should be doing 1850-1900 fps as It's in a long barrel GM ?The ball looks like someone bashed it with a sledge! I like one ofJack O'Conner'squotes reguarding ballistics ,"At what point of the animal's death did the bullet fail"? It was a fun day.............more to follow I hope...Harold

Nice work Harold. I have never had the pleasure of hunting those beautiful creatures. I will be in the woods this afternoon and hope to nail my first deer of the season.

RE: 1st muzzleloader deer
Speaking of your Bushnell Banner 4X ... that was the very first scope I ever purchased with my own money (my Dad had a old Redfield around the house I used for a few years). And that scope was the best scope I ever used. I had it on a Remington 742 Woodsmaster Carbine in 30-06 and shot deer out to 150 yards with that simple 4X.
Then one year my nephew who (because his mother could not control him) was living with us, decided to do me a favor and clean my rifles. He then unscrewed the back of the scope and let the gas out. I was mad enough to do something terrible to that kid. But my wife went out and bought me a Tasco 3-9x40mm World Class and I mounted that (the rifle still has that Tasco scope). I sent that back to Bushnell not really thinking they would do anything about it and low and behold they mailed me a brand new Banner 4X scope. So since my father in law was scope shy, I gave it to him for Christmas (I should have gave him the Tasco, but actually that old Tasco has been a great scope). |
RE: 1st muzzleloader deer
awesome, my first deer was a doe here in western washington with a TC .54 renegade, home cast RB and 110 3fBP. that brings back memories. The barrel I got on mine is the original 1/48 twist, not really ideal for RB or Conical, I get passable accuracy with both. Shooting the old style side locks is a lot of fun. Happy Day to ya.

RE: 1st muzzleloader deer
When I first got my Encore, I thought I would put a first rate scope on it. I put a Burris Fullfield scope on it. Well after a day at the range the Encore distroyed the scope. I sent it back. They asked me if I had put it on a ML and then told me they were not meant to be on a ML. Still not understanding how things work with different type guns, I put a Bushnell Elite 3200 on next. Well the same thing happened. The vibrations and sonic harmonics are different for shotguns/ML, centerfire rifles, airguns, and rimfire guns.
A good friend had the same problem and told me me about different scopes made for these different guns. I ended up getting a Bushnell Banner shotgun/ML scope for the Encore and all was good again. Luckily this lesson didn't cost me any money. |
