best way to foul a knight wolverine muzzeloader?
I have noticed as im sure all of you have that when you first shot your muzzeloader that the first shot is high or not with the same grouping as the next two shots. I have asked a few people what they do to foul their barrel b/c thats basically what the first shot did to the barrel, some say just shoot one or two #11 caps through it and i have even been told to take 40 grains or powder or so and put a patch done in there and then shoot it through the gun. So basically i was wandering does anyone here do anything particular to foul there barrel.

If you will clean between shots they should group to the same point...I don't hunt with a dirty barrel, black powder is very corrosive...

Unlike the other two.. my Wolverine is very fowl sensative. Almost two inch difference between the clean barrel and the fowled barrel. It shoots high and left for some reason almost90% of the time. I have hunted with it like this knowing that the first shot will be a little off. But then all my shooting is very close. So if I aim dead center on the kill zone, I will be in business.
When I do fowl, I take 40 grains of the powder I will be hunting with, in my case Goex 3f, dump that down the barrel, then push a bore button on top of all that. I then cap it and fire it off. After that I swab the bore just like I am reloading and then pop a #11 cap through it. When I now load, all shots go to the same place. My load is easy.. 80 grains of Goex 3f and a .44 caliber 300 grain XTP in a Green Harvester Crushed Rib Sabot. This is a very accurate load. |

I haven't tried this, but I am wondering how it would work to fowl your bore with a non corrosive powder like BH 209 even if you are planning on hunting with a different powder or substitute. Any thoughts?

That's a good point. BH 209 is clean burning and supposedely doesn't leave soot behind. I think you would be wasting your time fouling a gun with BH 209. If you must fowl the barrel use the powder you intend to shoot. I've never fouled a gun or shot caps before hunting, mine does great on a clean bore, go figure.
