SCARY muzzleloader ordeal

I got drawn out for a special ML hunt in southern Oklahoma (mcgee creek). I hadn't shot my ML so when I picked up my friend, I shot a few bullets and it shot pretty accurately. Yesterday morning I had a small buck come in on me right before 9am. So, I put the crosshairs right behind his shoulder, slowly pulled the trigger and he dropped in his tracks. Thank goodness! When I went to check him out, I shot him in the neck???? I'm not sure what the problem is. The road in was extremely rough (and there was no practice area). Or, maybe it's the scope. Heck, I dunno but I'm glad the good Lord was with me. I came out on the good side of this one. Time to take out the ML for a shooting session before next weekend.

Glad it worked out for you.
Hope you find the problem

well congratulations on the deer. Yes it sounds like some range work is ahead of you... Good luck.

WOW! The ML gods cursed you and blessed you at the same time. How far was the shot?

Short range, maybe 30 yards. I almost fell out when I saw where I hit him. Like I said, the good Lord blessed me yesterday. And, to top it off, right after I shot the deer I left for my sons little league championship football game which they won. The day couldn't have been better! But, serious range session before I go out again.

blah! Scopes suck! Had the same problem at the shooting range a couple days ago and it just ruined the moment. Once i get it replaced i plan on never mounting a scope on a muzzleloader for hunting. Just to fragile.

Just to fragile.
You must be buying the wrong scopes. :D

Open sights are not fool proof either, one time I drew up on a cow elk only to find the rear sight had fallen off. Any mechanical devise is subject to failier.

And, this scope is fairly new, maybe 3-4 years old. I'm taking to the range to see if its really the scope or if maybe I didn't have the bullet seated. Take care, Greg

Greg, no offense but is it possible that it was not the rifle/scope/load? You would certainly not be the first to "forget to squeeze". ;) But you definitely need to do some more shooting before takiing it out again.

1st question - what kind of scope?

It is a Simmon Aetec 2.8-10x44

2nd question - did I forget to squeeze the trigger?

I thought about this and I don't think so but it is a possibility. I was very calm when I saw him. I was in my climbing stand, turned around facing the tree because he came from behind me. I used the tree stand cable and the tree for stability, stopped him with a short bleat and felt very, very steady. But, that is always a possibility. I guess I'll find out when I take it out before next weekend.

If you braced the side of the gun against the tree it will cause most to shoot off. Lee
