Why do I even bother with sabots?

I took my son to the range today so he could have a little practice with the .22 before we go out squirrel hunting. Of course I had to take the KRB along so we could play with some different loads. The only shooting stall open on the range today was a 50 yarder, so I setup the sand bags and proceeded to shoot groups with a few different saboted bullets and varying powder charges. Most ofmy groups were pretty good. For my last group of the day, I picked up a box of 410 gr. Great Plainsconicals and decide to shot a group using 80 gr. of FFF Triple seven. I'd forgotten how well these things shoot. I onlyshot this one group before having to pack up for the day but, wow, was it a good one.

The first two shots almost went into the same hole, just about an inch over center. The third hit the top half of the bull. I wonder why I even bother with saboted bullets sometimes.:D

Why do you shoot sabots? Because..... um... uh.. well..... Ah hell, why do you?

Great shooting with the great plains, i had a winchester that loved them.

410 grain Great plains with that powder charge is all you would ever need.. Nice shooting there.

I used that bullet a few seasons back with 90 gr of triple seven to blow through adeer and 2 differentpigs. It may have to make a come back for our season opener in 2 weeks.

Have you ever tried the 300gr Barnes MZ in that gun??? My Knight loves them...

Sabots should give you flatter trajectories and less recoil with the same powder charges...

Of course, if your shots are within 100 yards, it doesn't matter...

One of my KRB's favorite loads is a 250 gr. expander on top of 110 gr. of 777. I haven't tried the 300's yet. The thing about these conicals is that they load so freaking easy, shot after shot.OnceI pop'em past the muzzle, the slide right on down without any swabbing between shots. You'd be surprised how mild the recoil is with that big bullet, but then I'm not recoil sensitive either.:D

I may just do that. It's my understanding that Hornady isn't producing the 410 gr great plains any longer, only the 385 grain. I've tried the 385's and the shoot ok, nothing really impressive though.

Unless you have a decent likelihood of longer shots, you have no need to shoot sabots with groups like that.

One of my greater disappointments in the last year was Hornady's decision to discontinue the 410's. They were my "go to" bullet in my New Englander for years and never failed me on deer.
