Pursuit II XLT Short report
Just recieved my new rifle . Good looking gun with pretty good fit and finish .The rifle has a 28inch nickel finished fluted / ported barrel and black stock . Gave the bore a wiping and went out to shoot a few thru it . The breech plug come out easily with no tools, that feature is really great .
So far I have only been able to shoot at 50 yards . Have only tried Horandy 44 cal 240 gr and 300 grain XTPs . With the 240grain XTP 90 grains of FFg Goex black powder and a 209 cheddite primer accuracy was OK but not great . Changed over to XTP 300 grain with 90 grains FFg BP much better group, bumped it up to 100grains and was getting great results . Was shooting 3 leaf clovers from the bench . I want to see how this load will preform at 100 and 150 yards . I do not understand why the less than stellar results with the 240 grain bullet. A friend told me I should be using muzzleloader 209 primers as they are milder ( ?? ) That my cheditte primer can be " pushing my bullet off the powder charge abit before it ignites " Is he pullin my leg ?? Can a different primer make that much difference ? will post more once I have time to shoot more. |
RE: Pursuit II XLT Short report
It's hard to believe but the kind of primer can make a difference in accuracy. Whether it is pushing something off the load, I would not know. Since your shooting loose powder, I hardly doubt that as the extra heat from the Cheddite primer would simply flood the charge with flame and should cause a good solid ignition.
The reason your 240 might not shoot as well could be simply your rifle does not like that weight of bullet. Try dropping the powder charge down to 80 grains next time and see what happens. Although if you're getting that kind of accuracy with the 300 grain. That is where I would stay. Sounds like a great rifle, and an excellent report there... nice shooting. |
RE: Pursuit II XLT Short report
the 240 grain hornady xtp shoots really bad out of my pursuit xlt as well. The best bullets I've shot are the 180 grain xtp and the 300 superglide shockwave. The 300 is AWESOME.

RE: Pursuit II XLT Short report
Sinceevery powder has a different pressure curve, that could make a difference too.
