first BP deer

Just wanted to post that I got my first deer in MZ season here in Delaware. Just a doe around 90lbs on the hoof, but it sure is exciting hunting with a BP gun! I think I'm going to use it in the regular gun season as well. I am shooting a Winchester Apex in .45cal with 200gr Hornady SST sabots.

congratulations on the doe.. it sounds like a perfect table size deer to me. How far away was the doe from you, what powder charge were you using, where did you hit her, how much damage did the 200 grain Shockwave do, did you get complete pass through, and how far did she run???? Sorry for all the questions, but that bullet has my interest as I am sure others as well.

Perhaps you'd like to tell us the story? Again, congratulations.

Congratulations Edelsite! Its a lot of fun and very addicting after that first deer. I haven't used a centerfire to hunt with since i was 14. Its all muzzleloaders for me now days.

Invest into a digital camera so you can post some pics!

Apex is a great little rifle, i had one some months ago and then sold is to Corey. Super accurate rifle.

RE: first BP deer

Thanks a bunch. Here's the particulars on the harvest....Caught her and a friend sneaking down a trail near my stand about 40 yards away. When I had a good visible shot, I picked the bigger one of the two and aimed for a heart/lung shot. I must suck at shooting offhand because I ended up hitting her in the spine directly above the shoulder. Needless to say, she dropped on the spot. After examining the result of the shot, I noticed the 200gr Hornady SST passed directly through with about a quarter size exit hole. Since it was a spine shot, it didn't travel through much flesh, so I'm not sure it's a good test of how the bullet will perform under a normal heart/lung shot. The gun shoots well and is sighted in using 100gr worth of 777 pellets. I need to go practice shooting offhandand get off the rifle rest more often though! With that bullet/powder combo, I've been averaging about 2" groups (100yds) with about 1 flyer out of every 5 or so shots. Hopefully that info will be helpfull. I'm heading out again tomorrow, so wish me luck

Thanks again,
