It's a "frame of reference" thing. Those who grew up hunting before the white tail explosion of the 70's, 80's and 90's had it pounded in their heads that shooting does was a very bad thing. Some just can't let go of that lesson.
In our area in the 1960's you were lucky to see two or three deer during the season, and very lucky to harvest one - bucks only at that time. The doe restrictions of those days worked. Herds are now at (or above) the carrying capacity of the land andit's not uncommon to see deer on most every hunt. Taking a couple of does every season is a no brainer and necessary for the health of the herd. In Louisiana, the Wildlife & Fisheries Commission runs a Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) where they will survey a hunting clubs lease andrecommend how many does should be harvested based on population estimates andavailable browse. They even give clubs extra doe tags over and above the normal 3 buck/3 doe season tags.
Maybe you shouldhook up with a State wildlife biologist and invite him andyou dad out for a steak dinner. The conversation could be enlightening.

I was raised on the old saying 'a doe is a downgrade deer' as well. Tastes the same to me.We have been fortunate to have an amazing amount of deer and it is pretty easy to let the air out of one. Unfortunately some people don't appreciate the gift as given to us. Hang in there, something good is in the workings for you!
