XTP Shooters??
Wanted to know if anyone uses Hornady XTP's for Deer? (250 or 300gr)
I'm thinkin about trying them this year in mine & my sons inlines. We have shot Horn. SST's before and harvested Deer with them, but we also lost deer with well placed close shots due to no exit wound and NO blood trail---Very frustrating when you do your job & bullet does not. Thanks, Mark |

The 240-300g XTP will surely drop your deer with no problem. And are very accurate. However, the most over looked mistake/problem most shooters make is over-driving their favorite bullets[&:] Even those tough SST's, with 3-pellet loads, will Splat on deer at 20-30 yard close shots. And you may know all this already, so I'm just reminding you of normal ballistics ;) A 80-100g of your favorite powder will take any north American big game out to 150 yards easy.:) So if you know your usual shooting distances, you should be able to go with a medium speed load to cover the terminal impact from 30-150 yards.;) |

RE: XTP Shooters??
Background that I omitted: my sons guns are T/C Omega & Pro Hunter, powder is loose 777 2f (110gr) and distances are 30-150 yds with 150 being extreme. Also, the SST's we used were 250 gr w/horn. sabots.:)
I have bought a Savage ML to use this year for myself and have options for loads picked. So this thread is for my sons T/C guns Mark |

I bet if your boys back that charge down to 90g, that the XTP's would work really well:) You may also want to check out the Barnes bullets...I Know they are expensive, but they are a fail safe--that will always penetrate and expand;) All my buddies that have used them, swear by them:D They find a cheapo bullet that approximates the same ballistics for sight in, and finish off with the Barnes, so they are ready for the hunt! |

Very frustrating when you do your job & bullet does not. Might look at this thread a lot of the information was discussed there... http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=3020888 There is a lot of information in it - but it is long... |
RE: XTP Shooters??
I uae the Xtp in 300 grain for deer and the XTP mag for Elk . I used 100 grains of Pyrodex in the Traditions pursuit pro ( 28'' barrel ) and 90 grains of Bh209 with the XTP in my Encore . So far we ( my son and i ) have had great luch with them . I get better accuracy with them than i got with SST 300 grain , and 4 other bullets i tried . I hunt Elk every year so i use the same bullet for both .

RE: XTP Shooters??
I shot some 240 grain XTP Mags (.452) during a range session a couple weeks ago with my Omega. I used 90 grians of RS and was really impressed with the groups. I have never hunted with them but I am considering trying them this year. I have killed two does and a coyote with 300 grain SWs using2 Pyrodex pellets and I was very pleased with the results. I am surprised by the amount of people who seeem to have problems with the SWs.My field experience with them is minimal but so far so good.
