primers made for reloading ok?
 

My neighbor told me a story yesterday about his trip to the local sporting goods store. He was looking for 209 primers for his muzzleloader. He said he found some winchester 209 primers in the muzzleloading section but he didn't like the price. So he goes to the reloading section and finds 209 shotgun primers for reloading shotgun shells. He said they were about half the price of the ones in the muzzleloading section.

Are these the same thing? Would it be safe to use the primers sold for reloading shotgun shells in a muzzleloader? Seems to me that they would be the same thing, but if they are, why would the ones made for muzzleloaders be more expensive?

I guess I've just never thought about it before because when I need muzzleloading supplies, I go to the muzzleloading isle of the store.

Personally, that is a good question. I never tried shotgun primers. Although I have used Winchester W209. I should have my friend give me some and see how my rifle likes them. They might be hotter then a normal muzzleloading primer, but it would be interesting to see if someone has used them.

I think it is a shame the way the stores have increased the price of some muzzleloader supplies. The cost of #11 caps for instance. I can purchase .22 caliber bullets cheaper then I can simple caps.

I shot Cheddite shotgun primers for along time (I am a trap shooter also and have tons of them)before I started shooting Remington 209-4's. I have shot Federals and regular Remingtons and Winchester. I also have a couple of thousand of the Winchester T7 primers that I goton sale @ Wal-Mart.... Ireally have not had a problem with them although some do not like them.... I shoot them at the range and for recreation - because the Rem 209-4 is not available any longer and I save them for hunting.

I should also say that some of the hotter primers a believed to be responsible for the formation of the T7 "crud ring" - but I can not prove it.

I did a quick check on my Winchester W209 primers and they indicate "For Shotshell" on the packaging. So far, I have used them on T7 Magnum pellets and BH209 without any problems.

I've only been muzzleloading for about a year and all I've used is "shotgun" primers. Maybe I'm too dumb to know the difference but they seem to work just fine for me.

When I started with my Knight Disc there was no difference...I always bought CCI 209 primers, because that's what the local mom & pop store had...A few years later, I noticed WalMart carrying the so called black powder 209s...I think I read somewhere that the bp 209s are not as hot as the regular 209s to help with the 777 crud ring...

I don't know if that's true or not, I tried a pound of 777, didn't like it...I never did try the designated bp 209s, still use the CCIs...I'd buy what was cheaper, or more avaliable...If you have a crud ring problem you might want to try the bp 209s...

I shoot Pyrodex RS Select with Federal 209's - 'cuz that's what was cheap. Haven't had any problems yet. If and when I ever get some 777 I'll probably get some BP specific primers to hopefully avoid the crud ring, but for now, the Federals work fine.

i use Winchester 209 shotgun primers exclusively and they work well for me. Tried the Remington 777 and Winchester 777 primers and the accuracy was not as good as with Winchester shotgun primers: The 777 crud ring was worse.

I have used CCI 209 primers in my T/C Encore and they seem to work just fine. No problems, and they do not seem extra dirty. My 2 cents worth.
