I Know - It's A Sin
I know it's offensive to the gods of sidelocks, but in a moment of weakness I have sinned. I put a scope on my Renegade with the .45 GM LRH barrel. Just couldn't help myself and could no longer tolerate those fiber optic sights.
The scope is a 4X Simmons ProDiamond. The mount is the TC "Quick Release" mount with base adapter (which isn't really quick release at allsince you must remove a cross bolt to takethe scope andring unit off of the mountingbase, and really fiddle with the sucker to get it on and off). A .45 caliber one-inch barrel isn't light to begin with. But man, that TC basesure adds some weight to the gun. The three-piece mounting unit - base adapter, QR base, and QR rings - must weigh in at almost two pounds. It won't be a walking around rifle, that's for sure. But it should be sweet for sitting on a stand and playing around on the range. May the sidelock gods forgiveme. ![]() |

RE: I Know - It's A Sin
We is all getting older ya know, and it is too bad many game departments won't recognize that and allow us old farts a fighting chance at hitting a deer with something other than our cars. I would have a scope on my hunting muzzleloaders if the state I live in weren't so retarded.

RE: I Know - It's A Sin
Ouch Yeoman, stop it! That hurts. :D
Well I still have home made peep sights on the Zouave and GP flintlock, so I'm not a total infidel. Those two will never wear glass (I hope). |
RE: I Know - It's A Sin
Well I gave up iron sight compitition at about 57 and I had been wearing single focus glasses for about 6 years, I am 71 now and iron sights are just a blur and will be heading to the eye doctor for I think 4 focal blended lenses this time. Lee

RE: I Know - It's A Sin
Semi - I will confess curiosity as to the outcome of your scope experiment. I'm guessing that with the GM barrel you will produce sub 2" 5 shot groups at 100 on a regular basis from the bench. Now, go do your homework. :D

RE: I Know - It's A Sin
May the Sidelock Gods pee on your nipple......That's an outrage, an abomination, just simply terrible. (Let me know how it shoots and where you got it.)

RE: I Know - It's A Sin
Semi; Its ok, I have scopes on two of my sidelocks, can't see open sights worth a hoot w/ my old eyes either:eek::eek:. Makes it fun to shoot again:D:D

RE: I Know - It's A Sin
Yeah Yeoman, homework is due. But the hammer spurjust barely tickles the bell housing of the scope, so I was getting readyto file a tad off the scope side of the hammer spur. Then I read theTC pamphlet that came with the base, and itsays if your hammer makes contact with the ocular bell of the scope theywill send you a new re-contoured hammer free of charge. So I called them this morning and the nice lady said it will be in the mail by tomorrow.
I'll be posting range results sooner or laterBronko, and hope to turn you green with envy.I've casted some more 420 & 340 Lees. Ikept some unsized at .457 and sized some to .452. Gonna be trying those to see if they do better than the ones sized to .451. If they shoot well I'll send you some to try - but you're gonna pay the postage. :D I got the base set on-line by putting a "wanted" in a couple of forum classified adsections. Lee &Thumper, we need a slogan like "Old Farts and Old Eyes Just Can't Shoot LikeYounger Guys" :D:D |
RE: I Know - It's A Sin
I did the same thing to my Renegade with a stainless steel .50 caliber GMB but I only put a 1X scope on it so it is legal for our muzzleloader season. I will bet that you have a good shooting rifle there with the 4X.

RE: I Know - It's A Sin
Semi - Thanks for the offer but I found the perfect combo for my 45 LRH. Its 80 gr of Pyrodex P with 45/40 Harvester EZ load sabot. It really packs them in there.
You know I'm only joshing you. I know you are old and your eyes ain't what they used to be. But didn't your daddy tell you to let that alone or you would go blind? He was right. |
RE: I Know - It's A Sin
I haven't worked out my solution yet Semi, but I have an equally strong dislike for the fiber-optic sights on my GMB.

RE: I Know - It's A Sin
Is that scope base/mt. system attached only to the barrel or the tang as well? I need two if it's not too big a P in the A to disassemble and clean after use..................Harold

I would like to know where he got the base for the rifle. I bought one a long time ago, but have not found one now, in a long time. I personally have no problem mounting a scope on a rifle. With my eyes, I just find with a scope I am a better shooter. Isn't that what its all about? Being able to place the bullet in the perfect spot where it will in a humane manner do its job?

RE: I Know - It's A Sin
Hi guy. I'm still at my sister-in-law's and working with a very slooooowww laptop, so I hope I get this posted before this sucker shuts down on me.
The scope mounting unit I have was one of those made by TC, but is no longer available. It's a three part system made up of a base adapter plus aquick release base that screws on to the base adapter, and a one piece ring unit that snaps into thequick release base. The baseadapter ataches to the barrel usingthe two screw holes for the factory sight, plus a third hole right at the rear of the barrel (not the tang unit). You can remove the barrel with the whole unit in place - no problem. Some TC barrels have that third hole at the end of the barrel right over the breech plug, and some do not. If the barrel does not have the third hole you need to drill and tap one for the mount - not too big a deal really. I have it on my .45 GM LRHbarrel which already had the third hole. Anyway, I got the original three-piece set by putting a "wanted" ad in the classified sections of several ML forums. One guy had the whole set, which I bought. Thenwhen the set showed up in the mail it turned out thatthe base adapter was not for a Renegade, but a Hawken. So I put another ad out there looking for someone who might want to swap a Renegade adapterfor a Hawken unit. That didn't happen, but I did have a contact offering to sell me a Renegade base, which I bought. So that's the story. Anyway, I still have the base adapterfor a TC Hawken (see picture in link below), but no quick release base or ring set to go with it. http://huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2958978 And yes, TC sent me a new lock attached to the contoured hammer. It's a real nice looking hammer too. I'll post pictures when I return home. The lady I talked to at TC said they had "a lot" of the hammers available. I didn't ask about left hand ones, butthe scope base unit I have will only work with a right hand gun. I don't know if they made them for left hand guns, but I sorta` doubt it. If they didn't make a left hand scope base there would have been no need for lefthand contoured hammers. Maybe another forum member will know the answer to that one. |
RE: I Know - It's A Sin
Some guys have heated up and bent their hammers so they will clear the scopes. Guy I know who has a sport shop here in town, has bent a few for people. If someone needs one bent, I'll check w/him.

More importantly please post some groups of how it shoots and the loads. If you can;t see your target don't expect to hit it.I'll be scoping mine.......................................Harold* ** I also called TC 1-800-350-5915 and they are sending me two pre-bent hammers free as well.Offered to drill my barrel free if I sent it to them but not an option as I live in Canada.Nice bunch of people! The new Weaver compatable base is #B3008801 and fits both Renegade + Hawken[Also will serve as a base for the older discontinued TC duo-ring quick release scope mt system *Gonna plant me a moose this fall
