BH 209 - First Time Out - Comments and Questions

Gentlemen:

This afternoon I finally jumped on the BH209 wagon. I was shooting my T/C Omega with Hornady 250 gr SST - using the supplied sabot. My load was 90gr of BH209.

This gun has a very tight bore, however after the first shot with the BH209 the bullet went down the bore fairly easily....since I am used to having to stuff the load down I am wondering if others have also experienced this?

I was running one dry swab after each shot and was surprised at the quantity of fouling on the patch, at least I wasn't expecting this. How often do you guys swab when using BH209? With some coaching from you guys I could easily be convinced to skip the swabbing :).

And finally, I was able to do a 100 yard 2.5" three shot group today, very nice for the first time out!!!

If anyone cared to give me your thoughts on my questions I would be appreciative.

Cheers
Randy

Well I noticed when I shot BlackHorn 209 that the additional sabots loaded very smooth and not tight. Also, I did not swab the bore. They claim is you do not have to swab. Next time, do not swab the bore and see what happens.

For a first time out, that is some great shooting. You might even want to try to kick the charge up a little and see what happens. Although that is a good load. Keep the posts coming. Its good to hear of people using the powder, and of their experiences..

I just got a TC Encore Endeavor. Got back into muzzle loading after hearing the no swab and easy clean up. The other day I shot 44 times with 100 grains of Blackhorn with out swabing or cleaning. The first shot was the hardest to load. The last one was just as easy as the second one. The last three shot group was 1 1/8 inches at 200 yards. I love the stuff. I got six jugs from power valley for $31.05 each with the hazmat and shipping. Every one says it is so expensive. It is a lot cheaper than pellets.

Normally you should not swab at all except for cleaning the oil out of the barrel before you start, BH209 isknow to load and group better if you just load and shoot, if the weather is warm or hot you may want to wait about 5 minutes between shots this will get the best groups and be the closest to a cold barrel as in hunting conditions.
I am part way through my 5 can and I shoot more with that expensive stuff than I did before those one hole groups are addicting/ Lee

Saxman, I was useing the 200 grain SW. It doesn't always group the small, but is really shoots them good.

Im glad you like the endeavor. Its a beaut! Im very happy with mine and it loves the BH209, 250 shockwave, and 115grain load at 100 yards. 1 inch groups. 200 yards is to far for me LOL, but im glad to see its grouping well at that distance!

as to the above post, I swabbed after 1 shot just to see how much powder was left also and it looked to actaully be more than the T7 left in the barrel. But it was a lighter shade. The T7 left a dark oily type mess. Ive played with it a little since and the shot after shot groups without cleaning stay pretty much the same. Aside from trigger jerking and etc, I dont see where its any difference cleaning after the shot or just shooting shot after shot.

Im on a my second can now LOL.. 32bucks a can

also lefse, does that place have a website?

I'm heading over to Indiana for a wedding the end of Sept. and plan on picking up twobottles of the BH209. I have a Knight KRB which I know I can't shoot the BH209 with the current breech plug. I plan to try it out in my CVA Wolf though. Can't wait to get to the range with it.

It might be powdervalley.com If that doesn't work, put it in google. Here in North Dakota we get some long shots. Lots of open country. I am not going to shoot over 200 yards. It is harder to get the wind right than the drop. 2 1/2 inches high at 100, hold on a deers back at 200. I have a Leica range finder to get the range. I ordered over size hinge pins. Going to wait til they come before I do more testing. I am on my second jug too.

Has anyone shot on one day, then several days or a week later, after NOT cleaing or even running a patch down the barrel, reloaded and shot again on another day. Did it affect accuracy?

The reason I ask is that I am going to shoot this weekend, then I leave for Colorado on the 11th. Should I clean the gun well after shooting, then shoot to foul the barrel when I get to Colorado before I load to hunt? Or just leave it after shooting, then just load up when I get there?

Clean now, foul before the hunt.

I shot my Omega and left it for 5 or 6 days and the first shot loaded harder than the next ones and was about 3" higher. I guess I would do like U C said and clean and then foul before the hunt.
