New Toy
Ok, The little brown truck delivered this yesterday. I was really excited about getting it cause I thought it had a fast 1:24 twist like Cabelas advertises in their catalog for the 21" barrel, but when I put the ramrod down it only made slightly less than 1/2 turn which would be a 1:48 twist, right?
Anyway it is an Investarms 50 Cal., Doesn't say Cabelas anywhere on it but I am sure they were made by INVESTARMS. The rifle looks like new but it was shot a few times so I gave it a bath, no rust but some black powder residue. Any thoughts on where to start with a short [crome lined] barrel with this twist? Or maybe it won't shoot anything accurately ????? ![]() I guess I thought for 100.00 delivered I couldn't go wrong |
RE: New Toy
Sure looks like a good buy to me, DP. For plinking, I would go with a patched ball over something like 60 or 70 grains Pyrodex or GOEX. For hunting - I favor the Gold Dots in Harvester sabots, either standard short high pressures or crush ribs. Give the 250 grainers a try over 80 to 90 grains.

RE: New Toy
dp,
I have the same gun in .45 and shoot 60 grains of 3f goex with either a prbor a 285 grain hollow point/hollw base conical from buffal bullet company. I use a wad with both and at 50 yards both shoot really well. I haven't put the gun through a serious range session yet, but the shooting I have done I am happy with. Mine also does not have "cabela's" anywhere on it and you are correct that it is produced by Investarm. They are solid guns and you should be happy with it, especially for that price, you practically stole the gun. Here's a link to the manual: http://www.investarm.it/media/pdf/manuale_avancarica_uk.pdf It seems pretty vague, but it does list max loads. Good luck with the new ML'er. |
RE: New Toy
I used to shoot sabots in a 1-48 the short bullets shot best 200 and 230 gr 45 cal shot good with 89 or 90 gr RS, I suspect the new conical by Hornady the FPB might work well so wood the Sabortooth up to abot 250gr. Lee

RE: New Toy
looks exactly like my fathers cabelas hawken. It shoots everything from round balls to powerbelts with excellent accuracy.

RE: New Toy
I have an investarms but the furniture is brass and no recoil pad
Mine is 1:48 |
RE: New Toy
A very nice looking gun. Investarms makes Cabela's, and Lyman Hawkins and other such rifles. The 1-48 twist will work real good. All you need remember is with that short barrel do not push it too hard as it really does little good.
I would start the rifle out with 70 grains of 2f powder and a patched ball. If you have some conicals around, try them as well. I bet it will be a good shooter. Its a real nice looking rifle. |
