Primer power rating
Some one told me about doing this and my curiosity got the best of me, I do know primers can make a differance in accuracy in muzzle loaders as well as in reloading. I do not believe the business about the sabot being moved before the powder burns.
The check to see what the 209 is doing is simple, a lubed patch on a jag on a ramrod marked and weasure how far it moves the answers will be relative depending on how heavy the ramrod is and how tight the patch is. Distance moved #1 Rem muzzle loading 9.7" #2 Win standard8.2" #3 CCI " 7.7" #4 Win made for inline7.2" #5 Fusion 6.7" #6 Win 7774.6" #7 Fiocchi 4.2" #8 20 year old Win 6.2"!!!!!!! #9 25 apc.7 The old WIN 209 shot different [did not group] I thought some of you might be interested, to the rest I apologize for the long post. Very interesting:D
I about to try the 25 ACP in my Encore |
RE: Primer power rating
Great experiment LEE, Don't know if anyone has seen the DVD maximize your muzzleloader but the creator, Russell Lynch does the same thing with about the same results and his conclusion was that the FIOCCHI primers were about the best with tripple 7, almost as good as the .25 acp.

RE: Primer power rating
Thats interesting, I think that we will find different powders will work best with different primers it really would not suprise me if the 25 apc or one of the lower primers were to work best with 777; I believe that the oposit will be true with BH 209 as it is a progressive burn powder and needs pressure to burn right. Starting the atright pressure may well be the key to a consistant burn which would give the same barrel whip and there for the best accuracy. At least thats my opinion. Some of us used to do this back when there was a dozen different brands of caps available and I was building Hawken rifles for sale. Lee

RE: Primer power rating
I think you are exactly right Lee, It's really good that we have these results so we can at least get in the ballpark withprimerand powder combo.

RE: Primer power rating
Good info. Lee, did you clean the bore and plug between tests? I don't know about all those brands but Winchesters will leave enough deposits to make a difference.

ORIGINAL: saxman1 Very interesting:D I about to try the 25 ACP in my Encore |
RE: Primer power rating
Underclocked
I wiped the barrel out with the old patch and put a new clean lubricated patch on; I was checking the amount of burn on the cloth patch to get an idea of temperatureand force lines. Lee |
RE: Primer power rating
Great info, thanks. Do you have the ability to do a test with #11 and musket caps for comparison to what you already have.

RE: Primer power rating
whats everyone reccomend for the BH 209? Today I was shooting the T7 primers which seemed to group very well(1inch at 100 yards with 115grains of powder & 250SW)). But from this post it seems that the hotter ones would be better for the BH 209? I doubt I switch since its no point in switching something that isnt broke:)
