I think the 45 LRH will do

I just came back from a range session with the 45 cal GM LRH barrel. I was shooting the Harvester EZ load 45/40 Sabots and Nosler 150 gr and Hornady 200 gr. XPT 40 cal bullets.
The left target is the 150 gr Noslers with 70 gr of Pyrodex P at 50 yds. 5 shots @ 1.175" C-C. Center target is 70 gr of Pyrodex P at 50 yds with the Hornady XTPs. 5 shots at 1.550" C-C (with 4 in .80" C-C).
Notice there is nodifference in POI between the two bullets.
I put a new target up at 100 yds and fired 2 of the Hornadys - looked through the scope and saw both were 4" high. Fired 2 of the Noslers and that confirmed both the sight setting and both bullets hit the same POI.
The rear sight was almost at its lowest setting so I dropped it down as far as it would go and boosted the charge up to 80 gr of Pyrodex P. Shot hit the black at 6 o'clock.
I raised it back up a 'touch' and fired the next five shots. These grouped into 1.425". Not too shabby for an old fart with open sights at 100 yds I'd say.
I have to say though that for some reason the lighting was perfect and the sight picture even at 100 yds was crystal clear.

Excellent bronko. I hope I can duplicate that with my LRH barrel. I've got a bunch of Harvester 45/40sabots, both the EZ Load and Crush Ribs, but haven't got any .40 bullets to try yet. I was thinking of trying the 180 grain Gold Dots. I was able to get the .410 (41 Mag) Gold Dots to load with the crush ribs, but they were pretty tight and I didn't get the kind of groups you got. How did the .40s load with the EZ Load sabots?

Semi - The 150 gr Noslers went in with what I would call good rifling contact. The 200 gr Hornady XTP were a bit harder going in. I attribute it to more surface area contacting the rifling. But all in all, neither bullet was 'hard' to seat. They went down with a start from my short starter and then firm constant pressure on the ramrod. I did swab between each shot witha T/C's #13 patch followed by a dry patch.
I was glad to see the 200 gr Hornadys grouping so well. I wanted to use a heavier bullet than the 150 gr Nosler. What did surprise me though is that the point of impact was exactly the same with both bullets. I expected the Hornadys to be a bit higher.
Another thing - I shot the 2 50 yd groups with the 70 gr charge then moved the target out to 100 yds., adjusted the sights and increased the charge as mentioned in the original post. After I shot the group at 100 yds and was happy (actually estatic), I moved the target back to 50 yds to see where POI was. I expected the shot to be a bit low but was surprised to see it punched a hole dead center in the bull. I'm totally confused but happy that I am hitting where I am aiming out to 100 yds.

Don't let it bother you. I've lived most of my life that way. :)

Nice shooting! That is odd that both bullets shot to the same point of impact, but weird things happen sometimes, what can you say?

For deer hunting I'd definetly recommend the 200 grain XTP over the lighter Noslers. Noslers are excellent bullets, but 150 grains is a bit light for .40 cal IMO. I've used the 200 grain XTP to take several deer over the past couple years and it has performed excellent for me every time - all BOOM-flops. I was using a little bit hotter charges- 80 - 85 grains of 777.

Bravo Bronko, that's impressive. I only dream of shooting open sights that well. Sounds like ya have a shooter there.
