What Model TC Is This? (UPDATED for CAYUGAD)

A guy on a local forum has this TC up for sale for $75. I asked him in an e-mail what model it is, and he replied "thompson center arms .50 cal muzzle loader". Anybody know the model?

Depending on the age of it, it could be all of them that LEE said. All of them are good shooters for the most part. Because of what looks like the longer barrel though, I will guess it is a Black Diamond XR. Most of the older named ones had a 22 or 24 inch barrel that hardly extended much past the forearm. The Black Diamond XR on the other hand has a 28 inch barrel and that looks about as long as my black diamond xr.

Well, I was checking for TC sidelocks when I came across this one. I'm not a fan of camo stocks, or that style of in-line. But for $75 I guess I should pick it up if the bore is good. The guy is only about eight miles away, so its no big deal to check it out. Looks like its missing the ramrod. Probably a 1 in 28"???

HeyCayugad, you eagle eyed pro, you hit it dead center. I sent the guy another e-mail and he says its a Black Diamond XR. What's the twist on those barrels?

EDIT: Never mind, I did a search an found your post on the BDXR, http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2869014&mpage=1&key=Black%2cDiam ond and see its a 1:28. Those are some great groups out of your gun with a variety of bullets. You said:

That Black Diamond XR is a very consistantly accurate rifle but of all my rifles, has to be the very worst rifle to clean. Maybe that is why I do not shoot it more...
Now, that's a little worrisome.

RE: What Model TC Is This?

The Black Diamond XR will fowl your breech and bottom of your scope something terrible. So I make a scope bikini out of duct tape and solve the problem. Other then that it is no different to clean then any other open breech rifle. Also mine shoots conicals very well with its 1-28 twist.

If you're not mounting a scope on it, then it is no harder to clean then any other rifle. And it does shoot Black Horn 209... :D

What I meant was, if any of you guys think you might want it for $75 plus shipping cost, I'll take a look at it,check its condition, and let you know what I find. Then if you want it I'll handle the purchase and shipping for you. Can't beat a deal like that - but remember, I'm semisane.

Your Semi sane, but your heart is good (Proverbs "out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks"). This would be an excellent starter rifle for someone. I can't think of anyone that needs it, but if you recall that is one of Cayugad most accurate rifles.

Hmmm.... It does look awful nice. If it would have been here a month ago, I would have bought it with the excuse "it's for the kid when he gets older." But now with the wife being really pregnant, somehow I don't think she would agree. Apparrently her financial priorities are a little different then mine. It does look pretty nice though...

RE: What Model TC Is This?

I have to kind of smile when I see people judge the quality of a rifle by how hard it is to clean. So it takes an extra five minutes. That's another cup of coffee and a few more tunes on the radio as I relax. They really are not all that hard to clean, but they are a fowling devil. When you shoot that open breech anything near the breech, especially the scope, gets filthy. So yes, it takes a little more time to clean. But try and out shoot that rifle sometime. On the range, you suddenly come to understand what a sweet rifle it really is.It has afree floating barrel.

When I was talking to Thompson Center last week, we got talking about the Triumph and how great it was. I told them the Black Diamond XR shoots good enough for me. He then pointed out that they no longer make the Black Diamond. Although he admitted it was an excellent rifle.

I am guessing that the breech plug is frozen in place, and the barrel is rusty and that is why he is selling it so cheap. Still there is the stock and trigger on the thing.

If no one else wants it, I'll buy the thing. Like I need another Black Diamond XR. Still for that price, I've put more then that down the urinal on a night out with dinner and drinks...:D

:DAre you sure you don't want to save those $$$ for your KRB purchase? :D:D Well, I'll call the guy and set up a look-see for sometime this week, and let you know what I find. It might be junk, but then again it might be a jewel.

Hey Cayugad, I checked it out about an hour ago. Believe me, you don't want it. I didn't even bother to take out the breech plug. The view from the bore looked like the inside of a 20 year old galvanized water pipe in a hard water area. The breech face was so bad I'm not even sure the firing pin would move. I have no doubt the firing pin mechanism is totally screwed up.

The guy says "I only shot that gun eight or ten times about a year ago." So I ask him if he ever cleaned it, andhe says "Sure I cleaned it, in fact I cleaned it up before I posted the ad. Maybe you don't know about these kinds of guns -you don't use any oil on them at all - that's why they get like this." :D

Well that's good to know. I really have no more room on the gun wall. I also have the two cabinet full. So I hated to think I'd have to find a corner to lean it in...

I didn't know I wasn't supposed to be using oil on them. What else have I been doing wrong?
