Shock Wave Super Glides
Tried some T/C Shock Wave Super Glides in my T/C
Triumph this weekend. While I am quite happy with thier accuracy I was very concerned with how hard they load. I don"t shoot M/L very often so I'm not real knowledgeable about this.Years ago I had a T/C Hawken and when seating the bullet I was taught to sort of throw the ramrod (not actually) down the barrel untill it bounced of the bullet.I believe that practice is incorrect from what I read, but that is actually what I had to do to seat the Shock Waves. Even with a glove on I could not always fully seat the SW to the same spot each time. I was wiping the barrel with a dry patch between each shot. Please help?? |
RE: Shock Wave Super Glides
If you were using 777 a dry patch will only get stuck and wont do much good any way,try a patch with vinagar windex or a 50/50 mix of alk and windsheild warsher followed by a couple dry patches, OR switch to Black Horn 209 and not have those problems. Lee

Lemoyne,
Yes, I was using Hogdons 777 pellets. I do have some T/C bore cleaner, would that work also?I am not familiar with Black Horn 209, is that a powder or pellets? The 777 cleans so much easier than powder; how about the BH 209? So, should I clean between every shot? Thanks for your help!! |
RE: Shock Wave Super Glides
Just checked out the Black Horn 209. Will have to try some !!

RE: Shock Wave Super Glides
Your problem was you were shooting on a dirty bore. Get some Windex. Dampen a patch but don't soak it. Then work that down the bore in short strokes from top to bottom using your jag. After that a couple of dry patches.
The Super Glide Sabots you were shooting should have been the easiest of all the combination to load in your rifle. If you shoot BH209 no swabbing is necessary. |
RE: Shock Wave Super Glides
Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like I'l try some BH 209.

Dave,
One other possibilty to try is the Hornady 250g SST with the Low Drag sabots. They have about the thinnest sabot available in a bullet / sabot package. They work great in my tight barreled CVA Wolf. Good luck and have fun. |
RE: Shock Wave Super Glides
My Blackhorn 209 came in on friday. Was able to shoot on Sat. and
what a differance loading!! No need to clean between shots and no problem seating the SW sabot at all. It did seem to me that I could hold tighter groups if I ran a patch through after several shots although there certainly was no need to as far as loading!! |
RE: Shock Wave Super Glides
glad you fixed the problem;) The superglides and that BH209 is a good combo, espically at 115grains;)
Even with the BH209, i would still take the time to clean your ML'er after a good days shooting though. It takes me a whole 5mins tops to competely break down and clean my endeavor. Even though the BH 209 can shoot shot after shot, I still like knowing my breech plug and everything is clean. I clean gun will lasts for years afterall;) Whats scarey is I had some friends that never cleaned theirs and they used triple 7. Sabots where a PITA to load and they wondered why their's always missfired or hangfired. Knock on wood, Ive never hada missfire in 14 years using any of my ML'ers goodluck and happy shooting |

Crazyfarmer,
I only shot 90grs.; is there an advantage to bumping up to 115grs.? I clean my breechplug with a nylon brush and pipecleaners and Hoppes #9. I am always unsure if it is clean enough, do you guys have any suggestions? Thanks, Dave |

RE: Shock Wave Super Glides
advantage depends.. if you are shooting a average shot of 0-75 yards then 90graisn works well. If you want to shoot a flatter line out to 125 then 115 would be a little better. More powder will give you more speed, which helps for flatter shooting. My only reason for stepping up to 115 was for more velocity and a good clean kill shot at 125 yards if needed. But with that said 90% of my shots are 15 yards LOL
try it and you might actaully group better also.. seems the sweet spot on most ML'ers is between 90-120 |
RE: Shock Wave Super Glides
I'm the same way Crazy
I am fanatical about keeping my gun clean. I just got a breech plug cleaner that looks like an old battery terminal cleaner it works great. It has wire in the inside like a brush. I also got a thread cleaner for inside the barrel.then some gorilla grease for the install. |
RE: Shock Wave Super Glides
With my Encore there is a price to pay for easy loading SST/Shockwave bullets: That price is accuracy. Shockwave Super Glides make 3" and larger groups. The Hornady Low Drag sabots make 2"+ groups andSST bullets in the red and the black tight fitting sabots make 1" groups. The tight fitting sabots are hard to load: But their accuracy is worth it to me.I carry a 2" furniture ball with a hole that goes on the end of the ramrod. That sabot is going to go down the bore.

RE: Shock Wave Super Glides
dunno about the 3inch groups with the superglides but the below picture shows their groups at 100 yards out of the pro hunter with 115grains of BH209
You can actaully put a nickel over the actaul holes(4shots). Hole near the center was just a 50 yard test shot:) Ive always had excellent grouping with the superglides. Now orginial tight fitting shockwaves grouped 2-3inches but nothing major difference wise. |
