Round balls?

I need you guys to help me out with some info. I was told a 1858 New Army .44 revolver shoots both .451 and .454 round balls is that true?

Depending on who makes the revolver, the size of ball will vary. For instance I shoot a F.L.Lippeta (also called Pieta)sold by Cabelas. They shoot a .451 ball with 25-30 grains of 3f powder and a #10 cap. The Rugers and the Colts and I believe the Ubertia shoot a .454 ball and can take a stronger charge.

The operators manuel on all my Rugars [3] have said use a .457 ball. It is supposed to shave a little lead when you push it in to the cylinder. Since they will tear a ragged hole with all 6 shots at 25 yds , that has to be pretty close. If you strive for accuracy I will give you some tips, do use a ball size that shaves just a bit of lead, use corn meal or wads to fill the cylinder so that when the ball is pressed down hard it ends up just below the end of the cylinder. Make sure it does not stick out any so it dont jam the cylinder when it turns. Lee

I got the;

Blued model 1858 target model. It is beautiful to look at and a very good shooter. Mine uses a .451 ball and 30 grains of APP 3f powder. With APP 3f powder, they have lots of power, and are easy to clean.
