Nikon ProStaff Scope

The 4XNikon ProStaff scope that had been onmy old Stag Horn for about five years would no longer hold zero. Put it in the junk scope box. Last week I bought a Savage model 93.22 Magnum. Had no scope for it. Took that Nikon scope, centered the reticle and put it on the .22.Zeroed the gun and it shoots great. Nothing wrong with the scope.

Not sure why the scope went haywire and is now OK. Those Pro Staff scopes are great.

You could send it in to Nikon to have them check it.. might be something wrong with it.

Was the scope set near the adjustment limits on the Staghorn and more centered on the 93? Some scopes go insane near the edge of their adjustment range. A Bushnell proved this to me.

The windage was pretty close to the max adjustment but it worked that way for years. Then the scope went haywire. It is working great on the Savage .22 mag. It is near the center of adjustment.

Those Pro Staffs sure are a nice scope for the price.

falcon, that Bushnell I mentioned was exactly the same. Near the limits but held just fine for a long time, then went haywire. Back to the center of the adjusment range and alll was well again. Bushnell told me that I had exceeded their 20 minutes of arc limitation [:-] ?? I had never heard of such a limit prior to that communication, and it seems insane that a scope maker would provide adjustment range beyond a scope's ability to hold zero solidly, but that was what they told me.

I am pretty sure the Pro Staff has a friction adjustment elevator?? I would not recommend a friction adjustment elevator for a MZ. A light recoiling rimfire is OK, but not an MZ. This is just my opinion. I know a lot of peope like this scope fora a MZ, but I will go with a positive click elevator for a MZ or any heavy recoiling firearm. Tom.

Thats why when gunsmiths mount a scope they will mill or shim to get it somewhere near center; its not unusual for one thats near the limit to walk the poi around in little circles, some of the lower priced ones can also have induced parallelax if they are over thier limit of arc. Lee

I am not saying you are wrong, because I am not sure. I do know that just because a knob makes a clicking noise, that does not automatically mean the elevator is mechanical and not friction held(cross hairs).

I will do a little research and try to find out. It is sometimes difficult to get clear concise information from manufacturers. And since Nikon farms out a lot of the scopes they sell, it may be hard to find out.I am sure that different mfrs. may have made the scopes differently.

I have done box tests on several Nikon scopes-including the Monarch's. And I was not satisfied with the results. Tom.
