SST velocity

Hi everyone,

I wondered if any of you could help me out. I don't own a chronograph, and I'm interested in knowing the velocity I'm getting - I use the ballistics calculator on the Hornady website to figure out trajectory, but it doesn't work too good if you don't know your muzzle velocity. My load is:

.45 cal inline (24" barrel)
200 grain .40 cal SST
100 grains loose 777 FFFG

I've found charts for 100 grains 777 pellets but I know that loose FFFG is going to produce higher velocities than 777 in pellet form. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

RE: SST velocity

Though it's not a direct comparison I have clocked the 200SW out of my 26" 50cal using 100gr of FF 777 and its muzzle velocity averaged 1988fps. The FFF velocity may be slightly more, say around 2050fps. I have found the difference in velocity of 3F 777 vs 2F 777 to be small, usually under 100fps. I would think the 45cal will produce a bit higher velocity than the 50 but your barrel is shorter so if you were to use 2000fps for your calculations youshould be close enough out to around 200 yards, of course your going to verify the results at the range aren't you? Of course you are, any reason is good enough for another range session. :D

dmurphy,

I was guessing around 2000 fps too - I'll use that as my number for now until I find out different. Thanks for the input. I don't have any way of verifying the velocity - no access to chronograph. But next time I go to the range (unfortunately probably not for 3 or 4 more weeks) I'll try shooting at 150 and 200 yards to see if it looks right.

I kept the one that folks on this board were recommending in a PDF (now you need one). I just searched and this is the cheapest price on the Internet:

Thats a nice one and is easier to set up than the Chrony F1 Master that I have. I got mine off ebaybrand newfor around $90 delivered. I like the remote display that mine has. I can set it up to 15 or so feet away and still have the display on the bench where I can read it without having to strain to see it. It sure comes in handy for verifying loads or whatever you need to check speed on.

Will that remote display work at a 100yds ? I have been doing some BC's and the running back and forth gets tiresome when you are over 70, you can not use the BC published by certain co. they are so far off that you can set them along side a Shock Wave[ their BC;s are pretty accurate; and tell that what is claimed is utterly ridicules]. I have been experimenting with bullets sine 1962, and I have my own guidelines, for pure lead bullets I dont go over 1500fps for regular jacketed bullets I switch to bonded at 1800fps if I can the one exception I make to this is the 40cal 200 gr SW it has preform well for me on deer and bear at high speed for a muzzle loader, but should they start making it bonded I would switch to bonded. I just wish they would or that some body would start making a 125 gr 40 cal bonded or copper bullet. Lee

lemoyne,

I've heard that the 200 SST does well at high velocities - I'm not worried about pushing it that fast for deer-sized game. I just like it because it shoots so well in my rifle - 1.25" - 1.5" groups at 100 yards. The 200 grain .40 cal XTP does well at high velocities too - I've seen them hold up and penetrate at 1800+ fps impact velocity. I just wish there was more of a bullet selection in the .40 cal - not much to pick from:(

"Will that remote display work at a 100yds ?"

The cable on my remote is only about 15 to 18 feet long. I'm not sure if it would work with a cable 100 yards long but that would make the BC process a lot less strenuous. Then again, I need the exercize.
