hollow pointing an cast bullet

I am wanting to hollow point the homecast 457 405 gr bullets. read up on some ways to do it but I don't have an 45-70 case or die set to do it with. when comes to buying molds I can't drop anymore then an lee mold. plus I found an excuse to buy an new scale ;)

Any idea's or input would be great.

The Lock, Stock & Barrel outfit (from your previous post)used to sell a Bonanza case trimmer that could be used with a drill bit to hollow point bullets. Maybe a dremel drilloradrill press could be substituted and done by hand?
TC made a kit with 4 die tipstomake round balls that would expand better.Thetips weresupposed to be place ona ramrodto notch the balls with different impressions after they were loaded into the barrel I believe, but a sharpspiked tip like theirs just might work on any bullet. You could probably substitute a nail and just punch a hole into the nose of a bullet. Anyhole placedinpure, soft lead should help it to open up and upsetin a slightlydifferent pattern than just a plain bullet would.
Another tip has a cross pattern, and a bullettop could also be lightly scored (or slit) that way with a knife. But the kitnever really gained muchpopularity for use with round balls.

A 405 grain bullet really has little need to be hollow point. The shear weight and energy of the bullet will cause the lead to flatten and expand and do all the necessary damage you would need. Besides, making a hollow point could cause it to fly badly and even so some strange wound channels I suspect. If all else fails, get a drill press and make a jig and just put a small hole in the tip of a few.

Drill a hole in a plate after you bolt it on the table of your drill press thread the hole and mount a chuck in it upside down put the bullet in that one put the size drill for the size hollow point you want make a depth stop so they are all the same. I make my own this way and it works fine for me. Lee
