Lee REALs in The GP Flintlock
Couldn't leave the range today without trying some 300 grain Lee REALs out of the .54 GP flintlock. Fired one five-shot group at 50 yards with 95 grains GOEX FFFg and a Remington Wonder Wad. I was hoping for something a little better than what I got (target below). I can't explain the horizontal stringing. Anybody got any guesses?
I shot them once before back on Feb. 9th., using 80 grains powder and got a much more reasonable group. ![]() |
RE: Lee REALs in The GP Flintlock
You might be pushing them too fast... LEE REALs do not seem to like a hard powder charge. Also you're shooting FFFg so I would back the powder charge down a little.

I think you're probably right Cayugad. My .50 New Englander does not like heavy charges with REALs. I guess I'll have to add another experiment to my list -try 70, 75, 80, 85 and 90 grains with REALS. MORE INSANITY! That case of powder isn't going to last as long as I thought.

I'll bid 60 to 80 grainson the powder. :)

You've probably got the range right UC, 70 will likely be the sweet spot. Actually, I figured 95 grains would be too much powder, butall I had with me wasa bag of Lane's powder tubes loaded up with 95 grains, so that's what I used. Didn't feel like walking back to camp for a powder measure.
