How Do You Store & Carry Patch Lube?

I just made up a batch of beeswax/crisco/olive oil patch lube. While it was still liquid I poured it into an empty Speer bullet box and a musket cap tin. The bullet box is real handy when shooting from the bench - just wipe the patch across the lube (or pre-lube at home in front of the TV). The musket tin carries nicely in a pocket. What do you do?

I do basically the exact thing except I bought some cheap rubber maid or glad containers because they are microwave proof. So if I want to dip conicals I can microwave it in the container, dip all the conicals I want, set them on some wax paper, and then let it re harden in the same container. For hunting I carry a small tin of it in a #11 container as I seldom need very much in the field if the conicals are lubed already...

I use moose milk on the patch material..

So patch lube is something you can make your own? I like that idea. What proportions of the ingredients make a good lube? Is there a thread with recipes that you could direct me to please.

There are hundreds (thousands?) of recipes out there. I get 2 oz. of beeswax in a"muffin tin" configuration from the plumbing section of a local hardware store, and mix it with 2 oz. Crisco and 4 oz. olive oil or peanut oil. Heat it in the microwave in a glassfor about four minutes until it's liquid, stir it up a little, and pour it intoany handy container.Works fine for me.

I always wanted to make my own but can never find the beeswax. What I've been doing is melting bore butter and presoaking my patches - about 100 at a time an dkeep them in a zip lock sandwich bag.

Hobby Lobby sells bees wax as well...$9.95 a pound...

I keep some in a wooden pill box that I found at the Mast General Store in Boone, about 25 years ago, in my hunting bag, if I want to be PC...

I usually make about a pint at the time, I just pour in a pint canning jar...I also have a few Altoid cans of it that I use for the range...

When using, I just cut a few strips of ticking, about 18-24 inches long and
1-1 1/2 inches wide and lube both sides, using a putty knife, then microwave for 20 seconds or so...This is rolled up and stored in the patch box, if going to the range, I put in zip lock bags...

I would imagine alleyooper would be glad to sell you some for less - if he has any that isn't committed (and when he harvests).

I have a few pounds of the brown wax left. I sell it for $3.00 a pound plus shipping in 3.5 pound blocks. I can get 14 pounds in a USPS flat rate box which is normally 2 & 3 days in the U.S.A. only for $8.95.
If I were to find a smaller mold I would need to charge more for the added labor. Most who buy our wax make it a group buy or they make candles out of any left over. This wax is clean but stained due to the bees not wipeing their feet when entering the hive and they have traveled on it several years. It is not for cosmetic use.

I also have some bright yellow cosmetic grade wax left. It is $4.00 a pound plus the USPS Flat rate shipping $8.95. These are from my older molds so are 3 pound blocks, 12 pounds to a flat rate box. This wax is pure enough you can make lip blums and skin creams from, like you see in Burt's bees displays.

It isn't stained as it is capping wax that the girls have only traveled on a few weeks.

The post Office has came out with a even bigger flat rate box for $12.95 but I have not gotten one to see what I can fit into it.

]E Mail me at [email protected]

I want your zip code to see if I can save you some shipping as some zip codes near me are cheaper to ship prority but not in a flat rate box.

I can also sell just honey at $4.00 a pound and can ship 9 pounds flat rate. Or I can mix a box with wax and honey if you wish.

:)Al
