Used to use very heavy charges of Pyrodex RS. Yes, 150 grains of the stuff and a .430, 240 grain XTP shot well: Groups were 1.5" to 2.25" at 100 yards. Found out that such heavy charges were not needed.

Currently my .50 guns use:

CVA Stag Horn: Two Pyrodex pellets or 100 grains of loose Pyrodex and a .430, 240 grain XTP.
CVA Magnum Hunter: 100 grains of 777 and a .430, 300 grain XTP
Encore: 90-120 grains of JSGand a 250grain SST.

T/C Encore .50 cal shooting 3x50 Pyrodex with 250 grain T/C Shockwave bonded bullets, < 1 1/4 in at 100 yards consistently. This is my elk hunting load and I shot well over 150 rounds of this at different temperatures to make sure it was what I wanted. Yes, I did try other loads and bullets and this is what Ifound worked for me and my gun.

Max load that I've used for my .45 in-line is 100 grains loose 777 FFFG.

According to my calculations, that should be the rough equivalent (in terms of velocity)of 115 - 120 grains of RS or Goex. I don't see the need to try and push it any faster than that. I use various sabots in the 195 - 200 grain range.

My friend called last night about us going after some youtes Monday morning.
He said his friend can hit a paper plate at 150yds. and will only shoot at it once if he hits it.

My sidelocks shoot well with loads of Goex fffgin the 70 - 90 gr range behindbullets in the 250 - 325 gr range,so I use 80 gr for most hunting.

I cast and shoot my own .50 cal minni balls. Out of my Traditions lite and Pro, andI tried taking them up to 100 gr. of pyrodex select. My groups starts to spread at that charge with that round. (I have buddies that have similar ML's and use that much powder or more, use sabots and their rounds have stayed tight). I backed down my powder load to 85 gr. and the groups tightenned back up. I'm also zero'ed in at 75 yards for most of my ML shooting is done with in that range. I believe that the experimenting, finding the right load for thespecific gun, is part of the over all fun of the ML experience. Good luck with your experimenting.

I shoot 70 gr by weight of 777 ffg. It's not quite 90 gr. by my volumetric measure.

Ino longersee the need for the heavy charges. I did at one point though. Now I just prefer the softer recoil to the faster load.
