Gold dot HP 45 auto 230 grain bullet
I can't believe I'm asking this but....what sabot would I use with the gold dot HP auto 45 bullet in the 230 grain variety? The bullet diameter is .451. I shoot the old knight wolverine .50 caliber ML with a #11 cap. I expect to shoot 80-90 grains of 777 powder. Ihave been shooting the precision rifle dead center bullet, 220 grains over 80 grains of 777 powder.
I'm very nervous about even trying this bullet but, unlike the XTP's, I haven't heard bad things about this bullet not expanding at close ranges etc. So, I'm thinking of giving it a shot. Has anyone shot this bullet that can share some real life experiences with me? Most of my shots will be probably around 30 yards give or take a little. Thanks, Greg |

I have not been shooting the .451/230 but I do shoot a lot of the Spreer Gold Dot .452/250's. You can shoot the .451 in which ever sabot that you might normally use to shoot a .452. In most of my rifles that would be a HPH-24... I am not sure whether the old Knight Wolverine uses a HPH-12 or the HPH-24 but I would suspect it would be a HPH-12... |

There is a possibility that the older Knight has a 504 bore, if that is the case the "crush rib" which is meant for tight bores, might allow a lot of pressure to escape by the sabot reducing velocity. I know when I tried the crush rib in the White with .452 bullets - I lost in excess of500 fps - the accuracy was still decent but not like shooting a 12 with a .452 |
