Sooo close

Just finished up all the wood work on my GPR. I have a few more parts to brown and then rub the stock down in oil and it will be ready! Hopefully tuesday i will be able to shoot it. Cant wait to get this thing done already, its only taken me 3 months. But i took my time to get it right.

Next i will be stripping "Big Girl" down and start on that one and get it back into shape for hunting. Or clubbing whatever gets within 10 yards :D

Couple pictures. Not complete yet but very very close. From the wrist up, the wood is lighter due to it only having 2 coats of boiled linseed oil rubbed into it. It will take 2 more coats for it to match.

LMF browned barrel and trim,

That is one beautiful rifle FG. I didn't realize that the GPR had two wedge pins in it to hold down the barrel. I like the pure wood look over the Hawken fancy look. Chap

Bullet molds came in. I'm not sure how many i have done, but i used almost all of the lead ive collected from GP's, maxis and other roundballs. I've got the powerbelt lead on the stove right now, melting down. "Outside stove"

Tomorrow the GPR will be speaking to us all :D

I took the GPR out a day earlier. After i molded 41 round balls, i went and loaded her up. After 3 shots and almost 40 minutes, i was steaming. I was so sick to my stomach and disguesting that i seriously thought about throwing the rifle as far as i could throw.
#1-2 and 3 shots were PITA's to get them to go off.

Long story short, i cleaned the rifle a couple hours ago, soaked the breech in windex and cleaned it all out, along with the vent liner.

Just finished loading up 90 grains FFg Goex, .018 pillow ticking lubed in borebutter, homecast .530 round ball.

This time i slowly poured the powder down the bore a little at a time and would tip the rifle over and give it a few solid palm smacks on the side of the lock area to get the powder down into the liner. After pouring the rest down, i rammed down the ball and got my pick and i could feel powder right at the nose of the touch hole.

Think i found the problem. FFg its a lot bulkier than FFFg that i am used to shooting and i think i clogged the breech up with powder by pouring it all at once right down the barrel.

Will try a couple more shots tomorrow and see.

I put the adjustable rear sight on, Do i screw in or out to raise POI? To me, it looks like i should unscrew it to get my shots to move upwards.

Man Gander, sorry you had a sour experience like that. What vent liner do you have on that rifle? If it's the factory Lyman liner you need to open it up, or better yet, get the RMC liner. (Well would you listen to me - a flintlock novice sounding like an old pro :D:D)

I hope i have it figured out. I didnt have any trouble at all when i was using fffg.

Factory liner. I will more than likely drill it out for now and then use a few RMC's later towards hunting season.

What does the RMC liner offer?

The RMC liner is installed with an Allen Wrench, so it does not have the screw driver slot like the Lyman liner. Instead, it has a socket hole for the Allen Wrench. This acts like a funnel for the flash to enter the liner. The flash hole in the RMC is slightly larger. In addition, the channelin the back side (bore side) of the RMC is 1/8" diameter, whereas the Lyman is 7/64". There's just a better flash channel for ignition with the RMC. As a minimum, I suggest you drill out your flash channel to 1/16" - that's what the RMC seems to be. You can go up to 5/64 if you still don't get good ignition. I have not had any ignition problems with the RMC - if the pan ignites the charge will go off.

See how different the RMC liner is (the one on the left).

i'll have to order a couple. They make'em for traditions too? The liner on my kentucky is enlarged and i'd like to replace it some time.

I'll see how it goes tomorrow and report back.

Ok its a love relationship again. I used a 1/16th" drill bit, but it dropped right into the hole, so i just went and egged it out a little and now its firing perfectly.
